Its a fact that you have some checks, not that the lacquer is harder.

"It also has 2 paintchips on the side, when that happened the chipped of finish looked like splintered glass.
Also, a friend of mine played it and when he put the cable behind the strap before plugging in he let the cable go and the tip of the jackplug hit the top, leaving what looks like a mini bullethole-trough-glass.
On the the 2009 R8 when that sort of things happen it just dents the finish instead of splintering or cracking."

I wrote that earlier in this thread.
If your explaination of my above hands-in experience with my 2018 R8 is more substantial i luv to hear it.
But if your the same Victory Pete from the AGF forum with the 3 or 5 degrees martin bridgepin and bridgehole debacle... then don't bother.. then i know you can never be wrong ofcourse.

I have a 2018 R0. Ive already done nitro touch ups on the pickguard screw holes. The nitro behaves just like any other. I have no chips or checks. Facts . You are making assumptions. Maybe you have a bad batch of nitro. I need facts. Any debacle you may be refering to must be your imagination as when I post a thread I can back up my posts with factual experiences. I will do some testing on the nitro in the control cavity to see if it brittle or not. It is no surprise then that assumptions you make over there may also be made here.

On mine it's brittle as quoted before, and now again.
The nitro on the 2018 R8 is more brittle than on my 2009 R8, the 2009 laquer will dent instead of splinter.. what would your assumption be if you experienced that on your R0?

I meant this thread on the AGF:

If I find the nitro to be brittle, it could mean they may have changed the recipe or it could mean they have had a bad batch. I am not sure what your point is about the Martin bridge pin holes.

BTW I also changed strap pins with no evidence of chipping, and I like to tighten screws.

Did Mark witness the formulation of this new alleged hard lacquer ?

Shipped cold?

Nope, it happened shortly after purchase before taking it to gigs etc extensivly and my home is humidfied and never too cold or hot for "wheater" checking.
I do gig and play it every week, but my 2009 R8 is my main axe for 10 years now and has been in the hot sun, been in cold vans in winters, humid venues etc.
Not a laquer crack on it, just dings, dents and dratches... uuhmm ...scratches.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but i just ran across this exact topic myself with the experience of my own Historic resisues.
I have a 2018 Gibson Custom Shop R0, a 2016 Gibson Custom shop Historic SG Standard, and a 2019 Gibson Custom shop 60th Anniversary R9. The R0 and the R9 are case queens, no wear or anything. Both the R0 and the 60th Anniversary R9 are also Gloss models, no VOS.I dont know if it is to do with turning on the air conditioner a couple months ago, or what, but the 2019 R9 is the only guitar i have that started to check, just sitting in its case.I found a laquer crack near the cutout area, heading towards the headstock up the neck, where the binding in the neck meets and rests against the binding on the body or top of the guitar.

I have the same issue with my two ‘06 models. On the R8 there’s no checking anywhere.

The Special has lots of checking everywhere.

Nitro done properly is meant to check. Be thankful you haven’t got a nitro coating full sticky plasticizing crap dulling the tone and not allowing the instrument to vibrate to its full potential, not to mention not allowing it to age gracefully. Checking is beautiful

I agree, i was just afraid seeing this...since this 2019 R9 is the only one of my Historics that the paint has cracked so i am scared in that, for the paint to crack in the seem between the binding on the neck and the binding on the guitars top...what happend? Is the fretboard ungluing there? You know....i mean how would it crack there unless the fretboard moved from the body?

I have been properly doing Nitro for 20 years and not one of my guitars has checked. I have 2 2018 ROs and they have not checked either.
