Gibson Pink Case Liner - sticky/oily

Well what was left of hurricane Ida dumped lots of water before she left. Luckily, I caught the water in the basement at about 2 inches and I got the pump to throw it out the basement window. I scrambled to get the guitar cases that were leaning upright with their bottoms on the floor out and upstairs. The rest were high enough on the shelving so they all stayed dry. The neighbors weren't so lucky and they got 2 feet of water and lost everything down there.

I pulled out the guitars and they were ok, opened the cases and that bottom corner that was on the floor got wet. I left the cases open for five days and they all dried out except that the Gibson cases with the pink lining in that area at the bottom are dry, but the pink fur feels sticky/oily. The case is dry but I don't want to put the guitars back in there. All my other cases are fine and are now dry.

Does anyone have any experience with these pink fuzzy case linings feeling oily/sticky after being wet?

What is the best thing to do? Is it the glue they used on this particular style of case that reacted with water? The pink fuzz? Should I just pull out that part and re-do it? or just can them and get new cases? Where do I get replacement case liner? I have no idea. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Thx!

Well I am very glad you survived that vicious storm. What a disaster.
First try goo-gone- I have found very few things that can resist that- and it will dry and disappear which you want, so there is no possible interaction with the guitars' finish. Then I would look for a luggage repair service- yes they exist. Like a cobbler- and that would be a close second choice as it is basically the same thing. As there is no way to "try" option one- i would just go for the second I think.

Yeah what a disaster. People up and down my street put all their stuff out at the curb. Never seen anything like it around here. Basement is drying out. Thank goodness the guitars had no damage.

Anyway, six days later, that pink fur is still sticky/oily/yucky. I've been pressing paper towels on it and it just doesn't seem to be doing anything. I tried the goo-gone but now it seems the goo gone didn't help. If not, I guess I'll have to cut out that corner and find something to replace it.

Now a luggage repair place actually might exist. Yeah. I'm thinking I could go down to the garment district and look for material. There even might be someone that can repair it. Those guys have everything, I think.

It would be a shame to toss the case. OK onward and upward, or downward, whichever way this path takes me. :)

Thx!

Yeah , you don't want to have a reaction from the nitro clear coat and the interior lining of the cases . Big time issue if the guitar reacts with the interior lining .

That's the word I was groping for yesterday- a "reaction". I would use the fur from the existing case by the neck that never comes in contact, and use it to replace the material that is sticky. Remove the damaged material with a utility knife (wear gloves). Use PVA glue to put it in.
I strongly suggest having that procedure done by a luggage guy though- they will sew it in and you will be pleased.

That's really what it comes down to . If they are staying put in one spot like on a stand who cares about a case , but if you will play out you will need proper protection .

That's a very good way of saving/salvage of the case .
