• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

The story of this Burst is the stuff dreams are made of. Rosie was given this Gibson Les Paul Standard 1960 with Gibsonette amp by her parents as a gift when it was brand new. She played it with her band The Rhythmettes (she must have been inspired by the amp!) for a few years before marriage and kids became more important than playing with the band. She put the guitar away and didn't think much of it until 55+ years later when her granddaughter expressed interest in learning to play the guitar and asked to borrow it (this was a few weeks ago!). The granddaughter started to realize exactly what it was after noticing that it wasn't quite like all the reissue guitars. The granddaughter gave it back to Grandma and informed her of what it might be worth today. I was thrilled to be able to connect Rosie with a buyer for the guitar after she shopped it around for a week. I think it was a whirlwind of a week for her! Congrats to her and her family on an amazing guitar and savvy sale.

This Gibson Les Paul Standard early 1960 is amazingly well preserved with nice color and killer top figure. It is completely original throughout and has pretty much all of the case candy including: hang tag/instruction manual, Mr. Dealer card, yellow toggle switch tag, orange Sonomatic string tag, leather strap, flat head screw driver, humbucker adjustment sheet, ABR-1 adjustment sheet, Stone case company case, case key, Gibsonette amp, and two pictures of Rosie with the guitar in 1962.

Great story! It’s fun to see these time capsules pop up from time to time.

That is a great story and guitar. I bet the proceeds from the sale can get the granddaughter a nice guitar and pay for college! Congratulations.

Whoa...!
In the picture of Rosie's band the switch tip is still nearly white! Cool!
Good eye. You can also see that the pickguard hasn't yet oxidized, so its still light cream in color. I've converted a number of 1950's P90 guards into humbucker guards, and its apparent that the pickguards were once a lighter shade than they are now.

Here are leftover pieces of converted guards that I've saved for color and thickness reference. Notice the '56 piece in the foreground is a much lighter color on the cut edge.

Out of sheer curiosity: Do you know how much it weighs?
And the tone? I'll bet it sings like heaven.. :)

Thank you! This one is 9lbs 1oz.

And the tone? I don't know yet! It still has the 12-54 set of strings on it that are ??? decades old according to the original owner. I'll be doing some light cleaning and set up this week then will restring with a proper set of 10-46 strings and then I'll really get to hear what the double white in the neck position can do!

Could the 12-54 strings be original? What gauge strings was the guitar shipped with?
