I had a '69 SG Special when I was a teenager and should have kept it........it had a fatter neck, but since then there appear to be no fat necked SGs being produced by CS, they just don't do them.
So you have to go M2M to get one.
And when you consider that in '52 when Gibson started off with fat necked solid body LPs, it's a complete reversal to present day with the thinner necks, and that's hard to live with.

The ‘64 SGs they’re currently making have fatter necks than the ’61s typically have. It’s not huge, but they definitely have a deeper “C” compared to the kind of flat slim taper carve on the ’61s. Musician’s Friend also has a special run of “Fat Neck” Custom Shop SGs on their website right now.

Has anyone measured these new 64 or the MF Fat Necks with a vintage early 60s?

My 65 J4 is super fat. Curious to know how accurately Gibson has reproduced...

I just got a new ’64 SG with a Maestro, the dealer’s website showed the neck as being .900” at the 1st and .990” at the 12th if that helps.

As an aside MF unfortunately are like one or two other dealers in the USA that won't send Gibson guitars overseas........can't even access their site for a looksee which is a concern.
Interesting when you get down to the nitty gritty with international dealings etc, however I do have a couple of reliable stores in the US should I need anything.

If you don't mind something newish, all the early 2000's Pete Townsend SGs are really chunky. I think they are still reasonably priced if you can find one.

For those who need/want something HUGE, try the Music Zoo. The Zoo now has a run called "Monster Necks". These necks are based on the 3 M2M's that I own. An '18 CS-336 P90, an '18 R7 Goldtop and my newest, a 60th Anniv R0.
All have huge/round/thick baseball bat necks. All have over 1" thick necks. The Music Zoo used the scanned measurements of my CS-336 (1st fret 1.031") as the template for their run.
Another forum member here has a '59 ES-335 on order as we speak, based on my neck profile. Ironically, I'm considering a '61 SG, with that neck profile. If you love 'em, you'll love this neck!

Just curious: how does a R0 60th Anniversary end up with a baseball bat neck? thx

🍑
As mentioned, it is an M2M. Since you have free reign as to the specs/color etc, you're not bound to the traditional specs, including neck profiles of each model.
The only reason I chose to do an R0/'60, vs a '58 or '59, was simple. This guitar was my 60th birthday gift to myself. I turned 60, the '60 LP turned 60... and the best thing....
I was able to choose my serial number. I did this on my visit to GC in 11/2019. My serial number is 0 0213. My DOB is February 13, 1960. Hence, my Birthday Burst

My 64RI is 0.89" at the first fret, 1.0" at the 12th. If that's not fat enough, you have problems. 😅

Yes the problem does not abate with those meagre measurements Tim:)
I'm with axeman on this........1" at the 1st and go from there, so pretty much a straight neck up to the 12th at say 1.05 with big straight shoulders and D shape...........that's my honey.

My 2010 SG Classic has a neck that's about .90. Nice and thick! But unfortunately it's no fancy Custom Shop.

Thanks, I didn't know the M2M spec was that wide open. 🎸

Congrats and enjoy the Birthday Burst! 🍑
Thanks and yes, that's the whole purpose of the M2M program. An R7 with a V III R0 neck, a wrap tail R9 ( who would do that???...lol) etc. You're free to go nuts . However, the price will reflect how much you deviate from factory specs.
My CS-336 is a perfect example. That model was released in 2017. It came with a wrap tail, 3-on-a-plate plastic tuners and a slim-60's neck profile. At the time I was considering a '54 BB Les Paul. I wanted something different. I liked the tone of the AlNiCo V neck/P90 bridge and the all mahogany body. But then, I didn't want another LP. Regular 336's were a 1-piece chambered 'hog body with a maple top. But this P90 model had a 1 piece mahogany top as well. That settled it. Sort of a LP/336 hybrid. So I went the M2M route and said I want it in the available TV Yellow, Grovers instead of the plastic tips and a stop/ABR bridge-tail. As mentioned, I gave them the neck specs I wanted. The result was amazing. The day I got it in, I called Tommy at the Music Zoo and told him order me an R7 Goldtop with the same exact neck. Eventually, to make things easy, the Custom Shop had me send the 336 back to be scanned. Now that neck profile is on file, for anyone requesting a massive neck. it was this profile that was used on my R0.
For those who havent tried a huge neck, give it a shot. At first its too big. But give it an hour and you'll be sold. And that whole "I can't play it because I have small hands" thinking is nonsense. But...I definitely agree, you play what's comfortable for you
