• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

So all in all I owned about 9 different reissues of 1959s and also 2 of 1958s
It used to be that my preferred year of construction was 2014 as they are amazing in tone, feel. look.

When the 2015 series came out I was the first to scoff at them, obviously because of the price but also the notion that I didn't care about the plastics, or glue, etc.
When I scored a great deal on a 59 vintage cherry burst (about a year ago) I figured let me buy it and see what the fuss is all about.
Needless to say, it is a phenomenal guitar that simply has it all - the closest in my opinion to an original burst that I tried not long ago

Maybe it's the rolled binding on the neck, the carefully selected resonant woods by Ed Wilson, the double carving, or the thin wet-sanded nitro finish (which contrary to popular belief these features are NOT on the 2017 series)

...all I know was that I had to also buy a DarkBurst (my favorite color since it's rare)

So I sold all my previous R9s and now kept these two 59s TH - this is how much they made a difference to ME

Here they are:

Very nice collection there sir! I first got a TH in an R6. It was the BEST new guitar I had ever played. And I have a lot. I then added a BB4. And 3 HS's (same thing just customer spec'd). I would suggest you don't play any p90 equipped TH's. That is a warning.

Nice pair! I feel the same about my TH. Very happy I pulled the trigger on it.

Count me in. My TH BB7 is the shiznit. Like others have said it's been my best NGD to date. I've also had many excellent guitars but the TH is just that last pinch better.

Fine looking R9s you've got. :salude

Thanks!

on a side note, does anyone know if the guitars I have (based on the pics of my THs) have eastern maple top (hard) or western maple (soft)????

Hi there.

I completely agree my friend, and though ended up selling fewer prior LPs than yourself, I did fairly close to exactly the same thing you did.

I kept only a 2003 Brazilian R9 and a 2001 Frankenstein R9 for trying different pickups or not worrying about banging it up.

Beyond that, True Historic 2015/2016 is all I am interested in.

They are louder acoustically, the geometry feels better, and they really do have a much bigger sound to them. When played with no amp, you get that in about 4 seconds.

I play clean tone a lot, with only occasional crunch distortion, and in this clean department the TH is a clear winner.

The TH guitars I have played and bought have included zero duds, where the R8/R9 series I owned and played DID contain a few.

Some here may disagree mightily, think this is foolhardy or voodoo, but hey, it is money I earned and I do not regret this move - in fact I celebrate it every single day.

So yeah, in my view you are richer now than when you had more guitars, and I join you in this!!!

Thanks for the cool pics.

Totally agree with you Sparta!

on a side note, I got the reply from Gibson that they only used eastern hard rock maple on the "2015" True Historics :hank

it seems to insinuate that the 2016 and 2017 could be either eastern or western maple tops (not that it's a bad thing)

oh man, now i am scares.. R6 is on my wish list but never thought i would want to pay the extra for the TH.. however the 2015s/2016s are starting to have '2nd hand' pricings and also old stock, so can be had 'cheaper' and not horrendously more than the regular CS models pre 2015.
getting scared now!
