They don't line up, the guard is correct, check underneath

I know for a fact that one Korina builder thickness sands down old plastic to make his guards... So they should look correct underneath.

They don't line up, according to Eric, but they do line up according to John and CD.
Who is right?
I trust my own eyes on that. :ganz

Didn't make it there this trip. :dang

There is a certain amount of randomness in them, but on balance they mostly do.

We are talking about how the thickness of a razor blade...

If they line up then whoever aged it is bone idle....razor blades but no screwdriver...:hmm

Why not just take the bloody guard off...??

Why on earth would whoever marked the guard with a razor want some of those marks to directly mirror completely unrelated cracks in the finish.

Sorry guys, called me dense, but I just don't get it...:##

Now they line up, now they don't.
Choose the answer that fits your own opinion [everyone].

As for just removing the pickguard .... then it looks ugly! :wow
[probably have a harder time switching pickups, too :ganz]

Back in the 90s it was fashionable to trick out a new or used guitar by making it look old....and it was challenging and fun. This was back when every manufacturer had to make a "tweed" amp.

If you had ever done any "relic" type work you would realize exactly what I'm talking about and the mechanics of it.

Not funny on a $750,000 instrument.

1990s? :hee
I watched as guitars were having the relic treatment in the early 70s. I wasn't doing it, just standing right beside they guys who were doing it.

But, what does that have to do with the thickness of razor blades? :ganz

Clive,

This is my take on it.

They are not going to line up perfectly. Because they were a mistake to begin with, the blade "skipped" from the guard onto the paint. So there is going to be a slight variable.

There are all kind of peculiar tooling marks all around the guard....I only posted a small sampling of the photos Richard sent me. There are areas on the guard where there are no tool marks. This is a complete aberration among All of the hundreds of Gibson guards I have observed over 30+ years.

You also have the undeniable dremil buffing wheel marks on the treble side of the neck pickup and the poor quality 4 ply lamination work.

Hi Eric,
Hope you are well and Rockin! I hope I am putting this stuff in the correct places, I don't go on forums usually. The guard is correct, I have compared it to others, in person, the underside is just the same, none of them were what one would class as amazingly made but this was a model that was not selling and any chance of getting Explorers and Flying V's out of the door was taken. Ted McCarty, I understand had a rack of them still in the white wood outside of his office for several years, so slight variations are bound to occur.
I think with all vintage guitars we have to keep a very open mind to factory practices and not believe the myth and legend too much that everything was crafted wonderfully, it wasn't!
I was actually told by a Gibson employee of many years, that the main concern was to get the product out of the door and the money in.
Regards,
Clive

To expand on the process.

Some people razor blade the entire guitar, some people only to it at strategic points so that it will check where they want it to start.

Obviously they didn't want it to check under the guard.

And yet, people want the myth to be real.

That was a different time, and a different process....and it was certainly not fashionable as it was in the 90s.
