• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Gitfiddler had a great idea and I thought I'd act on it... Since we're getting more members of the
356/336 "club" it is about time we started a registry thread to collect our pics, sound reports, etc.
in one easy to use location. I did this last year for the Classic Antique Les Pauls and now we've got
several entries in there... let's do the same for the 336/356 line and show 'em the love they deserve
:salude

I'll start with my 2004 Gibson CS356 "Wildwood Edition" in honeyburst. These were a limited run
of 40 (I think - does anybody know the exact count of how many were made?) They were originally
sold by our own forum dealer Wildwood Guitars in CO. I got mine off of eBay from another LPF member.

I love the Classic 57 pickups in this one... just the right amount of woody open tone (somewhere
between a 335 and a Les Paul). I also like the ebony board and slim neck (very much like my 2000
Les Paul Custom Premium Plus).

I often tell people that the main differences between a 336 and a 356 are similar to those between
a Les Paul Standard and a Les Paul Custom (binding, inlays, ebony vs. rosewood, etc.). Now owning
the Classic Antique (similar to a chambered Standard IMO), the Custom and the 356, I really think
that is a great way to see the differences. My Classic Antique has the Classic 57 pups (like the 356)
and the tones are very similar at times. Of course, this also probably has something to do with the
large chamber in the Classic Antique and the semi-hollow design of the 356.

Anyway, here's the pics...

I've named her Audrey (after my grandmother) but she used to be called "Barb"
(after the wife - but my Taylor T5 is now "Barb"):

I really love the top on this one:

I did replace the top hat knobs with speed knobs (like my Custom):

A little Virtuoso cleaner and polish really can make her shine:

Comparing the 356 to my Custom Premium Plus:

p.s. I hope Clayville, Gitfiddler and some of the others will join us shortly in here.

I think the most outstanding feature of these guitars is the tonal versatility -- I can get everything I want between a 335 and LP, and close to Tele Spank with a single guitar. That, and the comfort. And the weight. And the looks. And... what can I say? It's my #1.

Sounds like this (or at least I do).

This is the only shot I have of my 336 in vintage sunburst. Great guitar. Big fake 59 neck. Brighter and less woody than my 335s so it gives me a whole different palette to draw on.

356, purchased in 2003, with Gibson 11-51 flat wires, the A string has been moved over a tad after this picture was taken.

Here's mine, a CS356 CA (CS 30501), a Music Machine "Stinger" (MM 356 14). The CA version of the 356 comes without the gold hardware (can't "age" it, I guess.

Bugger. Couldn't get any of the pics to load. Not from Picasa, not in "normal" size from fotopic. So there it is, with the R9, in the avatar.

OK, here's photos:

Of course you did... it would have nothing to do with it being some nice Gibson porn now would it?!?!? :rofl

Nah... it's just... Gene's is sort of a sibling of mine (Stinger, just a couple serial numbers away) and I don't have an LP for a comparison shot of my own. My CS-356 has made all my previous LP lust seem... sort of... redundant for the "time being."

Clay - I understand (sorta'... as much as I love my CS-356, I can't imagine life without a Les Paul as well) :hmm

Now, let's see if this works:

If you click on them, you'll get a bigger image in a new window. This, BTW, a CS 356 CA. It has had, internally, the RS treatment.

mmcquain, those tops are beautiful on your 356 and LP, gitfiddler now that is one of a kind a beautiful guitar with the trapeeze and the inlays look really nice as well, the pics with the bigsby are so big that i really can't see the finish, it might be my computer screen, but they look more like paintings than pictures, but even at that the flame looks nice, but i would like to see it in a smaller picture.

peace

I'm a bit late on this one. I have had this guitar since about 2004. This was a limited run to Music Zoo and I believe that Wildwood Guitars got some as well. I thought I better post these pics for the record as I may be putting this up on ebay soon to make room for a Lifeson ES 355. It is a great guitar and will miss it.

RareForm - you may be a little late to the party but what an entrance!!:ganz Very nice looking 356 you've got there. I hate to see you have to sell it. If I had some extra dough, I would be interested in it... love that natural flamed top.

A tasty looking beastie fo' sho'. That's a real nice looking back.

I noticed the other day that Wildwood seems to have a fresh run of the Natural born 356s.

Damn you, McQuain!!! I just bought an R9 less than a week ago. I thought my GAS would be under control for a while. Then you had to go and do this! Seeing all these beauties, I'm starting to feel the pains of GAS again! I thought I would have more rest than that.

You are now my wallet's sworn enemy!

Seriously, I love these guitars. It is highly likely my next electric guitar purchase will be a figured cherry red 356 stop tail. I may have to get a new acoustic (Advanced Jumbo) first, though.

Enjoy, Guys!
John
