Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
In 1978 I bought my brand new Les Paul Special w/ P90's for $385 (I still have it too, it's in the picture to the left) and in 1979 I bought a new SG Standard for $299!! (I WISH I still had that one!)
You did better than I. I got dinged for almost a grand for an H-80 back then by one of those 'Mom and Pop' stores which I am happy to report is no longer in business.
It's a day I'll never forget, I bought my first real guitar as a Junior is H.S in 1986. A white studio for $599 at Steve's Quality Instruments, now gone. I worked my ass of to get that guitar, subseqently it was stolen at a keg party shortly after, My father being a police sargent at the time tracked it down a week later. It's been passed down to a nephew who plays it to this day.
My recollection is that Standards were going new for around $600-$700 in the early-mid '80s. I kinda lost touch with the LP market in the late '80s though. Embarrasingly, I got too interested in shredder-type guitars for a while there and stopped paying attention to Gibson. Thank God I got over that affliction!
I bought my first new Standard in 82 for $625 with the protector case. I was still in school and not even working. The shop I got it from was really great about helping us young punks out. He let me give him 50 bucks and financed it instore for $20 a month. He charged me one extra payment of $25 as interest. I paid it off early and had to make him take the extra $25. When I started working I bought everything from amps to picks from him and only him until he closed up shop.
