Also, what is that metal thing on the pickguard?

that metal clip on the pickguard looks like one of those pick holders...looks like it's on wrong. Was one on the pickguard of one of my LPs. Sure is a beauty and as original as they come.

Ground wire from the bridge pickup cavity?

Solder on the ground wires in the control cavity seem off. :hmm

flatwounds.. this guy was old school. prolly more into chet than bloomfield. seems like a lot of 58's look really cool! to me anyway. is it a 58? :peace2

ya tom it looks like 2 different guys did the soldering.
with the guys choice of strings i think its a safe bet he didnt run dimarzios for a spell. so...
its still cool, joe probably got a fair deal and it does look pretty awesome!

That is in fact the serial number.

Here’s a cool pic of it in its non-original case with pics of the original owner playing it back in the day.

At one time it had a left handed pick guard on it. See the little hole where it screwed into the face? There’s a corresponding little hole on the top of the guitar where the bracket screwed in.

Fascinating... you guys catch everything, and I never cease to learn stuff here! With the extra pickguard hole I immediately imagined it was kitted out like Steve Howe's ES Artist with the TWO pickguards at one time (80's thing), rather than maybe being owned by a lefty... probably because I just saw a picture of that guitar.

I too am curious about the metal thing on the pickguard...
