• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Calling all 1968 / 1969 Les Paul Owners.

Hi valcotone
It's wood. In the pic below of the side of the neck, where you can see the line, I can feel the join where the finish is cracking a bit. I think it's a thin veneer, that's been fitted by a repairer sometime ago to conceal a neck crack

If you dont mind, Im trying to start a database of this era guitar. Id to have real data instead of just my horrible memory to help paint a picture of the 68/69 transition.

Even if you used to own one, if you at least have the serial and remember the neck construction, that will be fine.

If you could post any of the following info, Id appreciate it. If you arent sure about any of this, just say so. For example, Id rather get "I dont know" for a tenon than the wrong info. Also, if you dont feel like looking at the pot codes, etc, just post what you know offhand. You dont have to answer all of them.

1) First three digits of serial only.
2) 3pc or 1pc Neck?
3) GT or Custom?
4) If GT, P-90s or MHB?
5) 1 pc or pancake body?
6) Long tenon, transitional tenon, short tenon?
7) center seamed top? (y/n)
8) Pot codes if you have them.

Remember if you cant tell, just put "I dont know".

1) 559
2) 1
3) LPC
4) n/a
5) 1
6) lt
7) y
8) dec.68

1) 530
2) 1
3) GT
4) Hum Conversion
5) 1
6) LT
7) Y
8) I don't know

Nice to be part of this forum.

My well played LSLPGT with one open coil T-Top and one covered. Pickup routes are clean enough to possibly be factory (?)

2) 3 piece neck
3) GT Standard
4) HB - patent sticker T-Tops (one flat-head screws, one phillips) -
5) 1 piece body
6) Transitional tenon
7) _____ top?
8) ?
9) No Volute

She growls and screams with the best of 'em.

Great Guitar over all that really plays well finally after all these years and is such a pleasure to play along with my beloved 2014 R9.

Dotted i, 1 piece neck and pancake body doesnt go together. :)

Pancake bodies (actually full pancake bodies with extra layer in the middle and former extra layer under maple top) started in very very late 69. Dotted i and 1 piece neck are 68-may 69 features.

Dating this instrument has been as much of a mystery to me as ever . I have been looking at Headstock photos of the inlaid Gibson logo forever with the dotted I and it's all a mystery to me . I was told forever that it was a circa 71-74 and then I am looking at the dotted I and I just scratch my head . Not that I am not liking the fact that it could be a 68 or 69 ,I just never considered that .

Post some photos here. :)
It would be my pleasure as soon as I can take some and then have a hosting site as I used to have a free Photobucket account but I will not pay the ridiculous amount they are asking ($400 per year ) Also is it an indicator of age that the Patent Sticker # T-Top has the old style braided wire ?

Try Imgur site, i moved to them after Photobucket is a pain in the ass to use (critically slow etc.).

Braided wire was a standard back then, even in 70s.

I owned this 68 LPC =- #559499, purchased on Jan 5, 1988 (still have the receipt) in Newton MA. STOLEN in 1990s in Boston MA (still have police report). One of the worst days of my life. If any of you own this now....you are lucky, but somewhere long ago someone sold somebody a stolen good (probably for quick drug money!). Best LPC I've ever played.
