• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

for newbies only (under 200 posts) what model LP and amp do you play the most and why

A 97 Studio Les Paul into a Dr. Z Rt 66 with Marshall 412 or into a 65 super reverb. The 66 and the LP just smokes.

'95 Classic straight into (via George L)1997 Matchless 15 watt LG210, oh my

or if the guitar player wants to play the "lets increase the volume as the night goes on", then I will go into the Voodu Valve/Marshall 9200/Marshall 4x12(it's a bit much)

My Setup

Les Paul standard Plus (light burst) with Tom Holmes Pups. Through a Harry Joyce 30 watt head into a vibroworld marshall 2x12 with weber blue dogs or a Victoria 59 twin 2x12 that was custom made.

I find that with those 2 amps they cover the fendery and marshally territory very well. And not everybody in the world plays through those amps so there a definate punch in indiviuality of tone!!

mattallen, I'd love to try that Harry Joyce! I can't believe this thread's still alive, but apparently it is, so here goes:

I play a '93 Les Paul Standard or a 2002 SG Classic (P-90s) into a Tone King Comet 40A, or sometimes, if even more portability is required and big volume isn't, a Laney LC-15.

Why?
'93 LP - It sounds and plays and looks good, and the price was in my comfort zone. It all came together with this one for me.

SG w/ P-90s? - It's light as a feather, plays perfect and gets an awesome lead tone.

Tone King Comet - It's a treat. Fender blackface Deluxe Reverb with more headroom, or a Tweed Deluxe, or a Tweed Deluxe with more headroom which can be tweaked into Marshall territory.

Laney - it's cheap, small, and sounds darn good cranked. Vox AC-15-ish.

I'd also like to get a 2204 JCM 800 or 50w SL head + closed back cab for that kind of thing.

LP and Amp

I have a 98 58RI solid aged cherry finish w/Seth Lover PU's. I play though a Savage AUdio Blitz 50 combo or a Carr Hammer Head for those quiet times.

I use a Gibson Les Paul Studio(wine red) into a Fender twin reverb(2x12), and a Carvin MTS(2x12). I only use BOSS pedals, and I have a compression sustainer, blues driver, Distortion, and an ensemble chorus into an equalizer

2001 Cherry Sunburst 59 Historic
Fender Custom Shop 51 Nocaster
Fender 62 Reissue Strat Olympic White

Effects

Teese RMC3 Wah
Analog Man Bi-Comprosser
Foxrox Captain Coconut 2
Boss DD5 Digital Delay
Analog Man Stereo Chorus
Foxrox TZF Flanger

Amps

Maz Jr with 2 10s
Tone King 40B with 2 12s

At home (and when I'm not too lazy to take two amps) I run the amps in stereo with the Analog Man Stereo Chorus. My setup is mostly used for recording and playing at home and for jams with friends. I play drums in a couple of bands that do parties and such on occasion.

Heritage '80 Standard

Mine is a "root beer" colored sunburst Heritage '80 Standard with minor flame. I play it through either a Rivera S120-210, a Fender Dual Showman Reverb and a 2 X 12" cab with JBL K-120's, a Traynor Bassmaster with a closed back cab holding an EVM 12L or a tweaked reissue Mesa Boogie MK I with an Altec 417-8H speaker. I use different amps for different gigs. The Rivera is my "do-all" amp. I put a Space Echo in the loop and it'll get about any tone I need. The DSR is for loud clean playing. I use the Traynor and Mesa together with an A/B box. I use the Traynor with a Real Tube Reverb for clean tones and the Boogie for Santana-type tones.
I'm looking into buying a Historic '56 sunburst, as I like P-90's.

The best lead tone I ever had was with the '68 Gold Top I owned as a youth, through a cranked silverface Super Reverb. What a sound!
