• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

So I have been reading up on hand applied finishes on guitars out of curiousity, as when my Dad (and later me) used to build furniture, we always used very watered down varnish as a finish with very pleasing results, ranging from nice satin finishes to high-gloss shines (when enough time and elbow grease is put in). It got me wondering whether or not a thinned out nitro could be used as a wipe on finish? Even if carefully applied with a brush? Would save on the hardware costs for those of us without spray booths.

Once upon a time long ago I knew a tech who would do repairs and would spray nitro outdoors on calm no wind days , he had decent results for repairs . This guy was a mad scientist type that looked like the guy from Taxi who was in the Back To The Future movies .

Spray can nitro, outside on calm dry days. One thin coat, cure, wet sand with fine grit, dry, tac cloth clean. Repeat at least 3 or 4 times. No fast way to do this properly.

I have certainly applied nitro with a brush before for small repair areas. Wiping it on is an option but with each pass the fresh nitro lifts up and dissolves the layer below so it is very difficult. Spraying is of course best.
