• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Hello,
I have a problem that is the reverse of usual. I love my amp sound at lower rather than high volumes. It seems to lose its fluid metal sounds the louder I turn it up. It sounds best at a volume that is just above me no longer being able to hear the strings acoustically.

Part of me thinks it is related to playing at high volumes for any amp because I experienced this with my Krankenstein before my EVH.

I do recall playing a Fryette Pitbull some years ago ay high volume, however, and it still had the fluid metal sound at high volumes.

I am running the 50 watt head into a boogie 2 12 cab.

settings are: gain 12:30, low 3:30, mid 2:00high 3:30 4presence 3. On the high gain channel.

Thanks

One of my guitar buddies has the smaller one- 20W maybe- 6L6 tubes are not 'metal' tubes- I don't know what they were thinking. He wisely converted the amp to EL34's and it is one of the finest "heavy" amps I have every heard. Rich with a very musical saturation point- he is a sick, sick man- he will then take it and hit it with various dirt pedals- and combinations of said pedals.
It is fucking loud- and this thru a single 12"- although our rehearsal spot is pretty small.

I really !!!!! dig my EVH 3 6L6 50 watt. The matching 112 is perfect.
At high VOL it sounds the best. The 6L6 are for metal or hard rock.
I`d rather have too much and dial down if that makes sense.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but it may be playing consistency that is not obvious at low volume but becomes obvious once the speakers start moving air. For example your pick attacks may be louder than hammer-on and pull-off legato techniques. I know this was true of my playing for the first 5 years or so before I started playing with others, and in a band setting.

With all that said, you may like a compressor either as pedal up front or rack in the loop when playing at louder volumes.
