• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

SG Headstock Widths? Anyone Measured Theirs?

Out of curiosity, has anyone ever measured the width of the headstock, at the widest point at the top, on their 60's SG's? My interest is peaked because they seem to be all over the place. I realize that the LP/SG Specials & Juniors are slightly narrower, like those of the 50's Les Pauls, but the LP/SG Standard seems to be the same width as that of the larger LP/SG Custom headstock.

When Gibson reissued the Les Paul in 1968 the Custom had a wider headstock than the (Goldtop) Standard, as they were in the 50's. However, early in '69 the headstock of the Standard was widened to match the Custom.

The LP Customs have always been a little wider than that of the LP Standards, but it appears that when Gibson went to the SG body style they made the Standard headstock the same width as the wider Custom. Know what I mean? The headstock on my '69 Custom is 3.366" (85.28mm) whereas my Reissue '58 (R8) measures 3.16" (80.33mm).

Has anyone else noticed this? In case you're wondering, yeah, I have too much time on my hands today.

The headstock width (and even nut width) of any year SG would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Do you want any measurements from that, or are you only interested in standards and customs?

Thanks. I have found that the Special & Juniors are narrower like the Les Paul Juniors, Specials, and Standards of the 50's.
