The finish on my ‘83 Custom is starting to wear off, but underneath the paint is just black. I thought I’d see some mahogany peak out. Anyone know what’s up with this?

Top clear as mentioned.

But the flaking away is not a good sign. The lower coats almost look like there are pinprick holes in it. I am wondering if there was a little contamination between layers making for a poor bond. Typically nitro melts together to form 1 layer.

I had to refinish a number of Gibsons this year (older ones 80ties upto early 2000's) which had bonding issues between the first and clear coat, I have no idea what paint was used but it was clearly not nitrocellulose (the existing paint would not melt using paint thinner ) btw this was on both acoustics and electrics and it was not on all guitars so maybe they used this paint for specific runs or were testing it or they just had bad Batches (?)
