• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Hey guys,

My first post here at the forum :eek:la

Got my new guitar today! It’s a LP58 made in 2001 at the custom shop. It’s got a real nice flame on the top and the guitar got some wear to it.

Got a quick question for you out there:
Does it have a recarved neck or have you ever heard of a 58’ with a 59’ neck from this period?
The neck feels almost skinnier than my cc24. And it looks like it has had a refinish on the neck.

Take a look at the pictures attached and let me know what you think.
Chers!

Hey Robin, welcome aboard. You have joined, probably the most informative group for Les Pauls thats out there. A great group and tons of info...
As for your R8, those '01's are magical. I've owned too many Historics to count, but other than my M2M's, the '01's were the best. 1 R6 Custom Authentic, 2 R7's, and 3 R8's ( 1 reg R8 and 2 Custom Authentics). In my experience, all of the R8's seemed to have much larger than normal necks. That doesn't mean that there weren't any slimmer ones made. Yours has a great top....play it and enjoy it!!!!

Thanks! Yeah, I got to say it plays really great. And with that top it kind of reminds me of the Peter Geen/Gary More guitar, almost got the same wear below the bride pickup as well.
Right now I'm trying to compare it to my CC24. So far I think Nicky has got the edge, but I'm not quite done with the setup on the 01'.

I've got the measurements on the dept of the neck for the 01':
1 fret: 0,88
12 fret: 0,98

Also got a picture of the pots and caps. No bumblebees on this one.

Yeah all of my '01's had 1st fret depths between .930"-.940", with big shoulders. All had orange drop caps, from the factory. I ended up putting RS pre-wired Vintage kits in them. That really opened those guitars up

That is a beauty of a Les Paul , love the color and figure which is amazing . Orange drop caps from this period . Are those 57 Classic pickups or the Burst Bucker 1& 3 pickups ?

Regular production R8's in 2001 have C57's. The Custom Authentics had the BB's in 2001

Beautiful Les Paul! I agree that 2001 was a special year for the custom shop. My Oxblood from '01 is unreal!

I love the top on it, and the wear is perfect. One thing you can do is check the clearcoat on the neck with a blacklight. If it's all original it should have a uniform cloudiness to it. It looks like it plays like a dream!

Thank you! That’s a great tip, I will try that :)

My 2001 R8 is magical and I have owned dozens of Les Pauls over the last 4 decades.

Hello Axeman!

I own a 1999 R6, which has also a 59 neck profile. Maybe the Gibson Custom Shop wasn`t that consistent at that time.
