Neil Peart - dead at 67

TORONTO -- Neil Peart, drummer and lyricist for Canadian rock band Rush, died Tuesday at age 67, according to a representative for Geddy Lee.
A family statement says Peart died in Santa Monica, Calif., after battling glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, for more than three years.
"It is with broken hearts and the deepest sadness that we must share the terrible news," his Rush bandmates said in a joint statement on Friday.

RIP. Possibly the best technique of any hard rock drummer; I'm really glad I got to see them at the Philadelphia Spectrum in the mid-1980s.

    RIP Neil -

    When we are young

Wandering the face of the earth
Wondering what our dreams might be worth
    Learning that we're only immortal
    For a limited time

He's got a road map of Jupiter
A radar fix on the stars
    All along the highway
    She's got a liquid-crystal compass
A picture book of the rivers
    Under the Sahara

They travel in the time of the prophets
On a desert highway straight to the heart of the sun
Like lovers and heroes, and the restless part of everyone
We're only at home when we're on the run
    On the run

He's got a star map of Hollywood
    A list of cheap motels
    All along the freeway
She's got a sister out in Vegas
The promise of a decent job
    Far away from her hometown

They travel on the road to redemption
A highway out of yesterday, that tomorrow will bring
Like lovers and heroes, birds in the last days of spring
We're only at home when we're on the wing
    On the wing

    When we are young
Wandering the face of the earth
Wondering what our dreams might be worth
    Learning that we're only immortal
    For a limited time

    Time is a gypsy caravan
    Steals away in the night
To leave you stranded in dreamland
    Distance is a long-range filter
    Memory a flickering light
    Left behind in the heartland

We travel in the dark of the new moon
A starry highway traced on the map of the sky
Like lovers and heroes, lonely as the eagle's cry
We're only at home when we're on the fly
    On the fly

We travel on the road to adventure
On a desert highway straight to the heart of the sun
Like lovers and heroes, and the restless part of everyone
We're only at home when we're on the run
    On the run

Re: Neil Peart - dead at 67

I heard about Neil several hours ago.

I couldn't bring myself to post about it.

Some would call him one of the greatest drummers of all time.

    Negative.

Neil Peart was more than that.

Neil Peart was one of the greatest musicians of all time.

He transcended music in so many ways.

    Lyricist.

    Husband.

    Father.

    Author.

    Traveler.

    A wonderful human being.

The world was a better place with him in it.

The next world will be a better place with him in it.

    I won't say RIP.

Neil Peart is too busy right now for that.

He's got a new band now.

God bless him and his family.

I just heard about this. This is just terrible, terrible news. Now we know what the problem was, and I'm so glad they managed that incredible farewell tour before te end. Oh, boy--this really, really sucks...

Well said TB, Neil was one of the finest musicians ever. I've been a Rush fanatic since I first heard 2112, but sadly they never toured Australia so I never got to see them live.

I formed a 3-piece progressive rock trio in the 80's that covered a lot of Rush material. I was lucky enough to find a fantastic rhythm section - two (like-minded Rush fanatics) siblings who nailed the Peart and Lee styles.

I'll say RIP Neil, finally reunited with your wife and daughter. Rock on!

As a young Lad going to gigs, bloody loads of em, was part and parcel of life, on par with watching my beloved Manchester United - so much so that they often blended into one - put drink into the mix and half the time I didn't know who we were on the way to see. It was bloody magic.

Not so this band, seeing them was always an occasion. 1981 Bingley Hall - the only Band I've ever heard that could make this glorified cowshed sound any good.

Masters of their trade. Magnificent Band.

    Godspeed.

    Thanks a million.

Did anyone besides me notice how often Rush music was played in the bumpers during the playoffs? All networks, every game I saw.

Saw them twice, excellent shows to be sure.

I thought the way that the writer of the short story that "Red Barchetta" was based on got to meet and ride with Neil was awesome:

I also thought it was cool to see Niel's bike and kit at the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.
