A friend just posted this on facebook. Looks like the neck was refinished, and there's of course black over spray on the rest. But the guard, harness and wood is right. Pretty cool find!

A friend of mine stumbled across what appears to be a 1954 Les Paul at a recycling center yesterday. Yeah, it's beat up and was badly refinished in black, someone removed the original P90 pickups and the tuning knobs have disintegrated over age, etc, but this looks to be the real thing...

BTW, does that serial number look like a Gibson refin, or something else?

Unless I'm mistaken, Gibson never used a hyphen in the serial numbers back in the '50s, and perhaps throughout their entire history.

Damn!

Now, can everyone agree that recycling pays?!
That's serious grist for the dream mill, right there.

There are a few refins with numbers like that. They are assumed to be Gibson refins.
Not sure when they did this, but I bet it's documented at cfh's site . :ganz
[if it's still around :hmm]

Incredible score! That black will polish right off I bet, and the gold will be intact beneath :salude I wonder if the ‘68 case and knobs are indicative of anything? Deffo a factory refin S/N, and quite a pale back/pore filler, so maybe a ‘60s refin?

Wonderful !

I would relocate the stoptail and fill the gaps around the pickups. Or put in P-90´s, perhaps the PU routs have still the original size.
Some touch-ups in black. But I would leave her in this cool looking black !

I would buy this cool guitar immediately, if its for sale !
Cheers
