My journey with Jaeger Guitars Bavarian Makeover ...

    Dear Les Paul Forum Members,

after years of considering i have decided to give my beloved R0 in the magic hands of a well known luthier, Mr. Florian Jaeger of Jaeger Guitars.
i would like to share with you my journey from a pretty much standard 2003 R0 plaintop, in so called Tak Burst, towards a beautifully light aged early 1960 faded teaburst.

Hope you do enjoy it as much as i do.

I have had a very warm welcome at Florian in his workshop a few weeks ago. He is such a nice guy with an unbelievable deep knowledge of guitars especially original Bursts.

We discussed the makeover and he will send pictures and emails while working on my guitar to discuss the next step in detail.
With my following Posts i would like to keep you updated of my journey to make my dream come true.

    1. Lets get started! Hardware removed

    2. new inlays ; vintage correct authentic Cellulose Nitrat inlys in correct Color and pattern. Florian says they come form the original italian company that produced the inlays in the 50th.

    to be continued .

    some updates:

    fret dressing, trimmed and polished

    sticky Gibson lacquer stripped off!

The maple top of the Tak Burst Les Paul coated is pickled (dont know if this is the correct translation for "gebeizt") in yellow. Florian is using pigment to replicate the original 50th paint.

    Handcarving the top
"... with drawing blade I start working on the vault. This is a very elaborate, artistic handicraft that will take many days. Bleeding fingers!!! "

    … to be continued

...and after days of handwork and with bleeding fingers: authentic vintage topcarve contours with a beautiful recurve and a deep dish..!"

... with a bronze sledschiel I take the unpleasant shoulders from the neck...!

… with rasp and sanding paper. Shaping the neck.

    ...short TP bushings removed..

... the plug for the discant side. A sandwich made of hard rockmaple and Honduras mahogany…

… new hole for studs on the discant side (slanted)

...don't forget a new tiny hole and the groundwire...

And now: the slanted tailpiece, almost parallel with the Bridge

btw i forgot to mention that i have decided to do the "small" makeover (Bavarian makeover I )
Florian offers Bavarian Makeover II which contains : neck reset, hide glue, remove the Thrussrod condom and apply a brazillian rosewood fretboard , binding in original material … … …
i like the board on my Les Paul and i am happy with it.

The capacitors have been updated to old 60s black beauties already.
Pots come from "Vintage inspired Pickups" and 50s wiring of course.
    I might want a different Bridge ...
As Pickups i have a Set of aged double whites OX4

The rest will be aged slightly but remain stock 2003

    Dear Forum,

after a few days of not updating this thread i would like to continue to tell our story.
Florian kept working continuosly on my guitar but unfortunately i could not find the time to share the latest pix.

    Here we go:

    ...entire back fine sanded...

… Red Aniline Oilbased Filler …

Florian send me a very interesting voice message about any detail, manufacturing process and so on of what Gibson used to do in the 50s and what they do nowadays.
This deep knowledge is so much more than i coulde share here and i could not even explain it as he can at all. He is the luthier, not me. So if you want to know more about all of this maybe you can get in touch with him via his website or even better … start your own makover with him :-)

... the highly pigmented filler looks almost black in the pore. Here without first Clearcoat!

    Headstock sprayed and logo cleaned
    ...and a Gibbie again

...1st clearcoat on red filler on Body.

the next step will be super exciting! THE BURST COLOR!

I love these threads, thank you!

I have to comment on another thing though. Always glad to see a Daniel Johns reference. I still listen to Diorama regularly, it's a masterpiece!
This is a song from the new album, it's a deep meaningful song this one... No, it's not whiskey in the fucking jar... Philip Lynott

i was really looking forward to this :

THE BURST! Florian was asking me for my ALL TIME FAVORITE BURST PICTURE
Well ... there are a few but the one picture sample for my guitar is a photo of an original 59 Burst played by Klaus "Major" Heuser

Here are the latest work in progress pix:
the very first shot. FANTASIC! The greenish hue at the armrest is very cool but still maybe a hint too green for my taste.

After talking to Florian about what could be improved he send over this super exciting sequence:

i think this is spot on!
    drop-dead gorgeous

That is Really Beautiful Craftsmanship just outstanding
Do you live in Europe? And Just Dropped it Off
I wonder if you can send Florian over a guitar From The USA
and have all that work done then have it sent back with a
Brazilian Board now that the Cites Laws are changing?
Is That a Certain Package he is doing? What does it Cost?
You must be very Pleased and happy with this project

Awesome! Care to post the picture of the burst you sent him for comparison?
How much ageing and yellowing will he do to the lacquer?

    Dear Forum,

before id like to share the latest steps, here is the reference picture. We took this more as an inspiration rather than creating a replica.

    ...bindings neatly scraped...

    ...logo and binding ambered

within the next steps of the process will be coming a couple of clearcoats. Exactly that many the guitar would need. As few as possible, of course :-)

    Hope you like it

...in the meantime Florian sand the lacquer down to keep control over the thickness of the surface, and to keep it superthin…

    The final clearcoat!
I think it Looks so very cool how the red filler melts into the clear and give it this 3-dimensionality!

The waiting is the hardest part ...
Florian says the lacquer needs to dry for about a week, before he can proceed

i would like to share with you the latest steps:

    ...silkscreen applied...!

    Vintage Patina!
I have learned a lot from Florian about how he creates the "old look and feel" of the lacquer and paint and that it need many hours of handwork and special polishing.
He says his approach is completely different to what Gibson is doing with the VOS finish or even the true historic treatment.

Already the work in progress result looks stunning, i think:

...now in the aging process. At least a couple of days to the next pic

Re: My journey with Jaeger Guitars Bavarian Makeover ...

    Very cool!
A question to the experts: I thought that the curing process for the clearcoat would take much longer.
It is not even 2 weeks since the colour coat was shot. Is this really how quick Les Pauls were finished in the 50ies?
I thought this would take at least twice as long. Or is Florian using fewer clearcoats or a different finishing process?
Not doubting anything here, Im just a bit surprised and love to learn about this stuff.
    Cheers!

Re: My journey with Jaeger Guitars Bavarian Makeover ...

after paint and lacquer , now its about the patina or aged look.
The guitar should look and feel like an old guitar that has been played a lot over the years but treated well.

    ...first checks appear...!

...rolling the fretboard edges or that suupersmooth feeling of an old, well-played guitar.

and i love the new slightly aged inlays togehter with the original pretty dark rosewood fretboard.
