• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Ya I said frontMEN, so sue me. Frontwomen sounds awkward. Anyway there's been a lot of great ladies fronting bands over the years. They are usually singers that play an instrument occasionally eg. Chrissie Hynde, Ann Wilson, Stevie Nicks etc.

But this lady has got it all - great voice, stage presence, high energy and looks. When I saw this video back in 1985 I was spellbound.

Maria McKee with Lone Justice

Any others come to mind?

You've already mentioned some great ones. Additionally, I love Kate Bush's stuff from the '80s, as well as some of Suzanne Vega's work from that period. The Wilson sisters from Heart. I loved the production on Sarah McLachlan's "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy." And of course, Sade, Tina Turner, the Bangles, and Aimee Mann in 'Til Tuesday.

(By the way, I'm about as un-PC as you can get, and even I think "Female Frontmen" sounds a little odd. Maybe "Female Bandleaders?" "Great Women Singers?")

I think there's a fine line between solo female artists, and bands who are fronted by a female. You mentioned Aimee Mann of Til Tuesday - perfect example of a frontlady. The rest appear as themnselves, and have a backing band.

I'm glad you mentioned Kate Bush, I was going to do the same. She's incredible. I do understand Foggy72's point about solo artists though, but then again she did front a band during the few tours she did :) .

How about The Runaways? All female band who also spawned two great female solo acts.

I'm gonna go with Ann Wilson.

Barracuda.

(And total fox.)

And plays better in her sleep than I do awake...

But for the newer kids here this one really does it for me in a TOTALLY different way, talent oot the wazoo and a great video shooter...

Chrissie and the Pretenders was the very first LP I ever bought of a band featuring a female singer. She's about it for me.
