Hello, new here. Looking to purchase my first Les Paul Standard. I'm looking at the new 50's and 60's Standards. I'm mostly color-blind so my question is which one of the bursts are most like Jimmy Page's Les Paul out of the new 50's and 60's les paul standards? My choices are Bourbon Burst, Iced Tea, Unburst for the 60's and Tobacco Burst, Heritage Cherry Burst.

I want to say I'm leaning towards either Unburst or Heritage Cherry. Any owners out there care to share pics?

thanks!

Wow...what a choice for a first entrance......

I had the same wish for my first Paul and ended up with a Classic with a slim taper neck and then followed by a Standard Iced Tea with a 60's slim taper neck as well.:2cool

Fast necks i say!:)

Iced tea will get you closest to Page color.

Depends on what era, but in it's original state, it was more of a "Heritage/Vintage Cherry" than anything else. Absent of that and although a little darker, "Bourbon".

JP's #1 Paul has faded quite a bit from Cherry shade to Iced Tea tinge in time. A great looking shade that is unique not too dark nor bright loud to the eyes.:bug

Wonderful reason to buy a Burst Les Paul and a great guitar to want to emulate. I assume you want to match Jimmy's No. 1 Les Paul (he has others as well). No. 1 was a 1959, but before Jimmy got it from Joe Walsh, the neck was shaved down from the thicker neck of a 59 to a very slim neck similar to a 1960. Jimmy also had Grover tuners installed. Of the current Les Paul Standards offered, the 60s Standard are the closest spec wise to Jimmy's out of the box. They have the slim neck and the Grover tuners. They also have slightly more aggressive pickups (Alnico 5 instead of Alnico 2 magnets like the 50s Standards) which will likely better get you closer to Page's tone.

With respect to colour, there is no one colour that best approximates Jimmy's Burst. The original vintage Bursts faded over time. In the early days of Zeppelin, it was a heritage cherry burst, then it faded to iced tea, and now it is more of a honeyburst. Gibson offers the 60s Standard in Iced Tea and Unburst. From what I have seen, the 60s Standard version of Iced Tea is very dark and Unburst actually looks more like an Iced Tea to me. To my eyes, the Unburst colour actually seems closer to the light Iced Tea/honeyburst colour of Page's No. 1 since the mid-1970s onward. I would suggest buying an Unburst as it seems closest to the iconic image of Page's Les Paul during Zeppelin's peak to now.

You will want to make one mod to the 60s Standard LP when you get it though. The 60s Standard have reflectors tone and volume knobs like a 1960 Burst. Jimmy's had amber top hats like a 1958 through mid-1960 Burst. Spend $10 bucks and swap the reflectors for amber top hats. Cheers!

FYI, here is Jimmy's No. 1:

Given your parameter as stated: 60s Standard, Unburst, or Iced Tea depending on the top. Unburst slightly closer in color, IMHO. Depends on the particular spray... :salude

You can spray it the same as exactly what JP had in the beginning but it will not fade in time like what it looks like now, due to age/:dude:environment and use it went through!:)

Thanks for the in-depth response Catmandoo, I get alot of work done at Lay's. I also met the guy in Kent who sold #1 to Joe Walsh. Dan Shinn is a cool guy and knows his stuff and showed me some Page Les Pauls that he has custom refinished. Seems like the shades of these new bursts can vary because today I went to a local store to look at them and the Unburst look washed out, almost a Lemon Burst but they also had an Ice Tea and it was not dark at all (even though I've seen some dark!).

So, I went home and ordered the Iced Tea 60's and the original Gibson Speed Knobs. I think that should get me close!

I asked a question on the forum on here before if there was a way to darken a heritage sunburst to look more like JP's....like rub a lil dirt around the edges lol....don't really think that would help....:spabout

How old is your Paul? Some leave it out to the sun to fade/oxidize, some just let it age naturally or play the heck of it so to get it all smudge up along with the sweat and all at the same time tarnishing the hardware...that should do the trick hey!:hmm

Go for Ice Tea Burst and I would choose the 50's model as the neck profile is bigger on the 50's versus the 60's .

Wow, Green.Eyes, you are very knowledgeable about Page's No. 1. Those are some great connections to have. :yah

I was going to mention in my previous response that there can be considerable variation in colour with these guitars and suggest you check them out in person, but since you mentioned your colour blindness, I was not sure if that would be of assistance. I'm glad you were able to check them out and make a determination in person. How come you are ordering online instead of getting the one you liked in person? Given the variation, the one you ordered might be very different from the ones you checked out in person.

Because the only store that had them in stock was Guitar Center and I got a better deal online. I actually bought a "blemish" that was 400$ cheaper; However, at the cost of not being able to see it before hand I admit was a huge risk to take. So I gambled. It's not as flamey as I would have liked but then again Page's didn't have a whole lotta flame... It's also darker than I would like, the Unburst would have been closer. But... it's really light comparatively. It feels like 9lbs maybe under, I will weigh it later and it plays great! I think I will keep it, I can't find anything wrong with it whatsoever. The neck date puts it at Feb 22 of this year and final check off/assembly was April. I went to swap the knobs and I got the wrong ones so I have to go find the top hats, gold or vintage amber!? Also, man those knobs are hard AF to remove!

Well, here's pics. Hope I did this right:

Some more "glamour shots". Maybe it has more flame than I thought? Should I go with Vintage Amber or Gold top hat knobs?

Congrats, gorgeous guitar! Withe the darker colour and the tight chevron flame, I would say that it gives me a strong vibe of Jimmy's No. 2:

The fact that it plays well and that you like it is what really matters. With respect to the knobs, the gold tophats are better. The "vintage amber" are typically way too dark. They are an old attempt by Gibson to capture the colour of the gold tophats once they have aged and ambered, but not very successful IMO.
My CS9 Les Paul was puchased to be an Eric Clapton Beano tribute, but it ended up being much more flamey than I thought (top actually reminds me of Page's No. 1 with the flame pattern and eye of circular grain on the bass side), but I fell in love with her. She's midway through a Historic Makeover right now.
