• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Do different 'brand' magnets make a significant difference?

I'm pretty much set on my wind & magnet-type, just wondering if fiddling with the supplier makes a great difference. If so, how do the different suppliers compare? Much thanks, _Dreman.

Buy your magnets from ThroBak as they’re made here in the States. Most others are made in China and the formula is wrong if you’re going for a vintage sound.

Cool. So, say a long Alnico 2. How does the formula change between different manufacturers? I thought A2 was a defined proportion of elements. Is it just the location from which the metal was mined?

How will a ThroBak long A2 differ tonally from a (recent) stock Gibson or AddictionFX magnet?

Check into throbak’s videos. They did a long form explanation about magnets of the same type from
diffeenr sources and how they are charged differently and how that affects how the magnets will sound in a pickup assembly.
