Evolution of Fender Custom Shop over the years?

    Hey all,
I’m thinking of buying a ’58 CS Tele from 2005. I was wondering whether and how quality and vintage accuracy changed over the years at Fender CS?
Are the current CS models ‘better’ or more authentic in specs than the earlier (e.g. 2005) models?
How was the lacquer back then- anything like the real deal in terms of how it will age?
    Many thanks!!

Re: Evolution of Fender Custom Shop over the years?

I dabbled with the Custom Shop in the mid to later 90's when I was trying to find a Strat that worked for me. Sampled a bunch and ending up with a lightly reliced Cunetto that, while a really solid guitar, didn't work for me at the time. My head was so far in the vintage guitar world that I had an immediate bias with almost everything made after 1964. This was more on me than the guitars.

Today... well, there are a heck of a lot more available. Overall, I think the quality is about the same. The lacquer on my Cunetto felt good. Not quite the feel of a vintage piece, but close. The few Masterbuilt guitars I've played over recent years feel about the same as the Cunetto. Current CS seems to be saving the lighter weighted wood for the big ticket guitars, which wasn't necessarily the case in the past. I'm pretty impressed with electronics on current guitars, much more so than in the 90's and nulls. Both Fender USA and CS are making really good sounding pickups lately.

I neither endorse nor oppose other guitarists choosing to buy Custom Shop guitars. These are just my observations.

Hi Sonar, many thanks for your reply!
Interesting point about the CS saving the light wood for special models. Also about the electronics. Actually, I already pulled the trigger on the 2005 ’58 CS Telecaster I mentioned. Still, if anyone knows more, I’d be very interested in any further info on changes to the CS models through the years.
    Cheers!

Re: Evolution of Fender Custom Shop over the years?

I have to add my 2 cents to this topic about the Custom Shop , while the instruments are nice and I have 3 CS models myself they don't come close to a vintage Fender . I just recently purchased from Gruhn Guitars a 1969 Fender Custom Telecaster in 3 color Sunburst, double bound Alder body with a 1 piece maple neck that actually has some heft to it which I was quite amazed at and has some nice flame to it as well ! The Guitar is a dead mint and it is to die for ! I am not even a fan of Alder body Fenders as they are to bright for my ears and this one just sings and nails the classic Keef Keith Richards tone which is simply amazing .Such tone and vibe , while not cheap it is worth every penny I paid for it and is a keeper and I will maintain it in all its splendid glory !!!!!!!!
