Duane Allman 1957 Les Paul Goldtop Up for Sale

    Hey Everybody!

Just came across this forum and really like what I see, so I’m hoping to become a part of this community.

For my first post, I wanted to share an incredible Les Paul guitar going up for sale. It’s the 1957 Goldtop Gibson “Layla” Les Paul Guitar, which was his main guitar during his first two years in the Allman Brothers. We all know about this guitar, it is one of the most historic and publicized guitars ever. I even saw this guitar live in concert and the sound was just beautiful. The owner lets people play it, the Rolling Stones were supposed to play it at the end of July. I recently saw Gottahaverockandroll.com has the guitar and they estimate it at 1.5 million - 3 million dollars. Their auction starts tomorrow. Do you think it is going to sell? The guitar is so awesome.

Well, if this is legit, I hope whoever buys it will keep on letting people play it live. Having it at the Big House was a perfect place for it and Richard is a great custodian. I was lucky enough to play it in Arlington one year.

I thought it was fake. But I checked with someone in the know, and they said it's true. Virtually no notice.

It has not been for sale since 2004, and Mike Boulware is not the owner; Scot LaMar is.
Auction goes live tomorrow at 9am EST, and runs for 10 days...should be very interesting!

Right, but yeah it has. I was in the room with Mike and Charlie Hargrett when
they look at old pics and films trying to get definite proof it was Duanes. came down to the inlay.

Hah, I just remembered too that guitar was for sale in 2004 as well in a pawn shop in G-ville Fl.
Stolen from Scots girlfriend/wife the night before. pawned. It was returned. $150 thereabouts.

Just an observation. The pickups are not the ones Duane used. Actually I'm not even sure they are the ones Duane swapped out from the cherryburst. Any speculation how much that might affect the auction?

Hey Scot, I was in Tallahassee when Mike called to be on the lookout for the
guitar in pawn shops there. What was the original story? Glad it was recovered.
But still interesting. I know Charlie and I played the guitar that night or one before at Lillians.

That's shocking for $1000000.00!! This guitar has had many repairs since he owned it along with it not having his rewound pups.

Based on the dollar amounts Gilmour's guitars recently brought, to me it's not shocking at all.
Simply put, it's Duane Allman's Goldtop. Collectors at that level could care less about what has been changed, refin'd, what not.
It's all about bragging rights. They pay to say "I own Duane Allman's Goldtop." Simple as that.
If anyone questions the guitar's value due to the mods, etc., that person should be responded to with "Find me another Duane Allman's Goldtop."

I see it both ways but still believe what I said is true for many that care about the instrument. I do agree that some do believe celebrity ownership is worth extra but there are many that don't and even more that see damge repairs and none original electronics as a disadvantage. Make no mistake, I love the guitar, but I don't like whats been done with it in the past.

It is nice. Everytime I went to Mikes house and sat on the couch. That guitar
would plop in my lap. Really cool.

I thought the story was that it hasn't had the same pickups as when Duane owned it since the day Duane sold it. Those are now in the Fillmore cherryburst.

I don't think it has the cherry bursts original PU's in it. I'm sure there are those who know for sure. Somewhere along the line I read they had been removed and that there are Byrdland PAF's in it. If that's incorrect someone please say so

The PAFs in Duane's '57 GT are pre-stickered '57 PAFs. The DC resistance of each PAF was measured from Duane's Cherry Burst PAFs, and the pre-stickered PAFs selected for Duane's '57 GT, were as close as possible to the original PAFs, as far as DC resistance is concerned. They may be from a Byrdland..

Im going to assume the pickups were never changed by Joey Marshall after he got the Cherry from Donna (Duane’s ex) to the time Galadrielle inherited from him. He sadly passed years ago.

I doubt Joey changed the pickups but when Duane was playing it, the covers were on and somehow the cherryburst has the covers removed now. The photo of him the night he got the darkburst show both guitars with covers on. Still a mystery.

    Pretty crazy times!

A CBS partscaster, butchered, refinished and renecked twice, sells for $3.9mm.

A husk of a 1957 GT, chewed headstock, refinished twice (at least), non-original pick ups, not sure about rest of parts, is sold for $1.25mm.

As I've noted above, the prices have nothing to do with the physical object anymore.
    Actually, did they ever?
