Awesome pics, one of my favorite threads ever!
This thread also showed me JBL loaded fender amps were a BIG part of the Stones sound live, and in the studio for many years!

Whats that plaque in the bottom right corner of that Fender Silverface? Marking some kind of special run?

Yeah, like stated above that's the "JBL" plaque. Last Twin I bought was a '67 and there was a drip identical with the JBL, plaque and that international voltage switch thingy in the same shop. It was a tough decision buying the '67 (also JBL's, no plaque) but IMO those OG JBL editions drip with coolness. One thing is for sure, they were crazy popular if you had the $$ back then. I've heard people talk about how having the JBL models made you king of the jam session and in the 60's in Nashville fugateaboutit. Those suckers were everywhere if you watch clips of those old live music programs.

Thanks, interesting! It seems that JBL's are not that popular anymore compared to other vintage speakers, right? I somehow I associate them with beeing heavy and lifeless...:hmm

Blasphemer! Actually very articulate. IMO the best ever made.

It's crazy how they're either loved or despised, lol. I'd say when you mix the JBL ole Fender with a real tone-sucky 30ft coil cable you get a pretty distinct thing going on. A lot of people, including steel players, used to swap a single 15" JBL into Twins, Pros, and Supers, was basically an entire generation of country pickers. I see those pop up from time to time here in town. Gigged my JBL Twin for quite a while before I let it go to Blackbird after acquiring a Super, silly me thinking having both was redundant as now I miss that Twin and I think I preferred it's tone/feel too!

But, I'd say it wasn't just volume, I think their clean cut in the mix on tape was a big source of their popularity.

Hollywood Bowl, 25th of July, 1966
Opening acts were:
The Buffalo Springfield, The McCoys, The Tradewinds & The Standells
I was there and loved every minute of it!
`52 Goldtop that Keith purchased that day!
I have two identical straps like Keith has on the Burst in the photo of him in Sunset Sound and also when Mick Jagger was playing it. Cool, never knew that he used those straps.

Same strap (possibly) but two different bursts. Mick's has original Klusons and Keith's has Grovers.

Wow , pretty incredibile to hear that vintage Burst in such prominent fashion as Brian's Vox is barely audibile while Keith's Burst is clear and very present and sounds so delicious !
