Banker Handcrafted Guitars - The Midnight Special.

Here’s a short review of this superb guitar.

Singularly handmade by Matt Hughes, fellow member of the LPF and owner of Banker Guitars, for Charlie Starr and now residing under English skies.

The ancient Mahogany originates from the Monkey River in Belize, best guess puts this at 300+ years old. Benjamin Franklin was just a boy when this was felled.

A one-piece body, replete with forearm and belly contours, finished in a thin coat of nitro, and coupled with a hand carved, soft V shaped neck from the same wood rings like a bell and sustains forever. Unplugged, and striking an open E chord, I had time to go and make a cup of tea before it stopped resonating. This guitar is alive all over the body and neck…it’s extraordinary. I’d estimate it’s about 8 Ĺ lb’s on the strap.

An East Indian board is finished to perfection with medium Stewmac 154 wire, the fretwork is exemplary.

Damascus steel makes up the ironwork, beautiful patterns picked out by acid on this folded steel process adds a touch of real class to this already gorgeous looking guitar. I haven’t captured it very well in the photos, but in real life it’s stunning.

The pickups are a set of Bob Tyson 57 P90’s – have a search around, some great reviews, and a couple of Doug and Pat Road Trip videos meeting with the man himself. I love P90’s, and have played enough old ones to say that I couldn’t pick these ones out as new ones. Plenty in the locker for a tear up, yet with a lovely rounded full voice. Across the range they are fantastic.

I believe it’s a pointless exercise trying to describe sound, and even if it isn’t, I don’t have the skill to do it. However, I will say this, it took me 10 seconds to realise that I’m going to love owning this master-built guitar for many many years to come, indeed it feels as though I’ve been playing it for decades already. I know you know what I mean.

    The obligatory shot...

    Bravo Matt, truly.

Looks awesome and I LOVE soft V's!

    Probably my favorite shape.

Let's you get some leverage for a little 'extra squeeze'!

What caliber is the 12th fret?

Feels very much like an early SG neck Ren - bloody lovely.

It says 45 on it, is that the calibre, I don't know about such acrobatics, we're still on bow and arrows in the Motherland....

What I'd like to know though is, if I drop this on my foot, does it count as a shooting?

    45's are my favorite.

    Nice whoosh and gentle lift.

The shooting count is whether you are right or left of the guitar when dropped.

If you are left, yes it counts. Even if a cop dropped it on your foot.

If you are right of it your opinion matters not one wit apparently.

But seriously, the neck is what matters and I'm glad you got some screamin' P90's!

Sounds like seriously excellent choices were made.

The wood is gorgeous! I have played a few 'sinkers' and am jealous!

Ive never confused owning a bunch of high end gear with being some kind of a guitar player I'm a hack and I love guitars !

He thinks the mirror is a photo of a clown ?

The Myth: Neat wiring layouts always equate to great-sounding amps.

The Myth: If I would have lived with MOM & mooched till I was 48 I would play like Clapton !

The way Matt has melded together the multiple references is indeed both a great concept, and absolutely fantastic in execution.

I’m so glad you are enjoying it Paul, thanks for the kind words. There aren’t many of those Damascus guitars out there, but they are my favorites. They all have a very unique sound and cover a lot of ground well.

ive actually got this one going now for a client, mahogany topped with curly redwood. Solid Cocobolo and Rosewood neck with P90s and Damascus hardware.

Dude your powers... they seem to only get stronger!

The quality and quality of stuff thats coming out of that little shack of yours is pretty mind blowing

For the rest of you, go take a look at mrbankercustomguitar instagram page

I would say a good portion of the absolute best and most exciting guitarists on the planet right now are rocking Matts stuff on stage

Markus King is straight out of the same stuff that brought the world people like the Allman brothers, Dickey, Skynyrd, Derek Trucks (yes same as allmans) he is the real deal evolution of southern soul rock

    Brent Hinds from Mastodon?

Matt show em that pic of him with the Demon (if you like)

Matt made this badass dude this incredible ... shit I don't even know -- its like a reverse firebird (matt correct me if I"m wrong) but matt's own design

one pickup! Kill switch ! Mastery trem

Its very hard, I am sure, to make a guitar that is original, that does not look derivative these days but I think this one is like that

hell I never noticed the bridge pup has a three way switch to split it. look at you doing 'lectronics and shit!

It has this crazy wood pattern that looks like demon eyes at the top. Its just so damn cool.

sorry matt just wanted to brag on ya!

Haha thanks man! OCD and rugged determination go a long way...

Here is Brentís guitar. Sinker mahogany and Redwood with a humbucker that is split three ways on a CRL blade switch. Single north coil, parallel coil, series coil. Itís got a cool push button momentary kill switch as well.

Marcus has a few of them, heís on the V kick at the moment. Well, both of us are actually, haha. This is a sinker/black walnut neck thru that I did for him:

    And his current Korina fixation...

I just watched that video of Marcus again after I posted it. He is just unbelievable. The way he attacks notes like a hammer and has such a powerful sound, and then throws that mellow wah tone in for the solo. Without a doubt, he is gonna be one of the greatest players ever. Hell he already is. It is an amazing thing to witness.

Iím no scientist, but I believe it really adds a unique tonal quality to these instruments. It is an extremely dense, resonant steel bridge and adds a sweet, singing sustain.

The Revival Drive is on the shortest of short lists...I think they're utterly superb...a little rich for me at the moment in all candour, but definitely a target.

I also have a great fondness for Pete Cornish gear, and also intend to ask Stu Castledine of this very place if he can build me one of his Rams Head's. I just love his work.

I'd almost forgotten how much fun it is getting these little rigs together. I'm having an absolute ball.
