• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I've heard about these and now I think I have found one!

I have come across what I believe is a 1969 Les Paul Custom. It has been heavily played. Starting at the headstock:
  • The serial number is close: 128480
  • Keys have been changed to Schallers, but the imprint of the Kluson Deluxe tuners is visible.
  • Gibson logo (sans dot)
  • 3 Piece Mahogany Neck
  • No volute
  • No "Made in USA" imprint
  • One piece Mahogany Body w/ Maple Cap
  • Stickered PAF's

The frets were original, but totally worn away and unplayable. Pots have been changed out over the years. Bridge replaced with a solid brass abomination. Hope to add some pics, because I know that without them, it never happened.

Any thoughts? Am I on or off base? Should I restore and refinish, or refret and play the crap out of it?

if this one works, more pics on the way.

Wow, this one's been in the wars!
I'm surprised by the blue-greyish back of the neck colour... never seen anything like it.
I'd keep it like this, definitely not refinish.
Please post some pics after you've patched her up! :salude

Replace the frets, the nut, and maybe the knobs.

The bridge holes have been drilled way too big. I would plug em and put a nice ABR back on it.

After that, clean it up, string it up, set it up, and hit the gas. It will quickly become your best friend.

found this info on reverb:

"Unique to this Year: 1969 is a very transitional year for the Custom which accounts for a great deal variation of values within the year. In 1969, there are examples with single-piece bodies instead of the multi-ply body, no neck valute, and no 'made in USA' stamp that fetch substantially higher resale prices than those with these elements.

Wood Composition: Mahogany body, Maple top, Mahogany or Maple neck, Ebony fingerboard

Design Elements: Two humbucker pickups, block inlays, Kluson deluxe tuners, (should read: Super Kluson tuners) four control knobs, three-way pickup selector, black pickguard, bound fingerboard, stopbar tailpiece and Tune-o-matic bridge, gold hardware, headstock inlay

Finish Specifications: All standard Les Paul Customs from 1969 feature an Ebony finish."

these are the keys that match the imprint on the back of the headstock:

i found an old kluson catalog online. they were actually referred to as: "Super Klusons".
they were nicknamed "wafflebacks" by players.

And they have a different footprint from the Kluson Deluxes. If the imprint is for Kluson Deluxes [as stated] that's not right for any 69 LPC I've ever heard of. :hmm
