    Me neither.

The hell I'd pay almost a million dollars for a beat up partscaster.

I am a "standard guitar" man. Wouldn't pay what they charge for any vintage guitar, let alone an artist's.

Re: David Gilmour auctioning off 120 guitars

Reading the topic elsewhere I see a criticism of the dude due to utilizing the word "tool."

I don't think some people get it. It's not that the stuff doesn't have meaning, or is "just a tool," it's quite the opposite as they state. Clapton said the same things during his auction.

The more poignant statement, IMO, would be it's not a trophy. These are full time players and there's many more in the world. You get to a point where you know fiddles are stuck in the closet even though you're always playing. For some folks in the game of Art, a trophy de-values an object regardless of "the market." Sitting on the shelf isn't an honor. I got this beautiful instrument, but it's not a color on the palette, or at least not often enough to hang around. Emotionally I appreciate it, but there it sits in the act of sitting simply in my possession. For others, having that next big trophy is a drug, a validation, a sculpture, "preservation," exhibitionism and in purchase a heightening of the senses for a short moment.

When you're instrumental in creating Dark Side of the Moon you'll live as long as civilized society, what more validation do you need at that point? Keep the ones you use, sell the rest, er, I mean, in this case give them away to starving kids whilst validating the trophy hunters. The circle is complete.

Agreed. For a recording artist, guitars are first and foremost tools.

No need for an apology on your part.

I was the one that was being a dick.

It looks like Gilmour is trying to finance his version of changing the world, no doubt more global warming carbon credit new world order fascist nonsense.

Please don't post political BS. There are plenty of other places to do that.

Re: David Gilmour auctioning off 120 guitars

So I saw the other day that the catalog is not available for pre-order. Can't say I'm not tempted to get one, even though I don't have a prayer of affording anything on the list, unless there's a couple broken strings somewhere on there.

Re: David Gilmour auctioning off 120 guitars

The auction is the leading article in this month's Guitarist magazine (UK). Interesting read.

My two pence worth is that like lots of us in that he's reached a certain point in life when certain things no longer have value to you personally than they once did.

We've cleared out a lot of stuff but...……………………………...I keep looking at my guitars and just can't

Very noble of DG to sell them for charitable causes

SPOILER ALERT - the black Strat on display in London is NOT the original. They slip that in quietly. There is also a little trash-talking of P90 equipped Les Pauls. Blasphemy! Also can anyone verify the Martin D35 story? The bs detector on my watch (yes, some of us still wear one although there is probably a phone app available) was flicking into the red zone as this was being told.

I think the overall effort to auction the guitars makes sense given the fan/enthusiast base and what one would assume Gilmour's benevolent intent to be. That aside, honestly, when I hear the talking heads in this video start to overstate, over-punctuate their natty descriptions of well-used musical instruments, it's just off-putting. It's a common occurrence with any number of devices deemed collectible.

The value is/was in the artist, not the trappings or tools. But..... that's just my POV. I've never understood "collecting."

4string, thanks for posting this and so many of your photo offerings over the years
