As some of you know, my go to amp has always been my '66 VR. Well today I ran into another gem.:jim
I have always wanted to buy a BF Super Reverb. Well this one came up for sale today and I happen to be the first there with cash. A 1966 Fender Super Reverb, fresh out of the original owners closet, no shit! Been there since the mid 70's after being his main amp in the local ballrooms. When I arrived, we plugged in and the snaps/pops sounded like the movie theater lobby! The normal channel sounded fine, but I could not get output from the vibrato channel. I drove 50 miles to get a SR and I was not going home without the amp. He gave me a screaming deal I could not refuse.:dude:
I got it home and proceeded to give it a good once over. The amp is completely stock with the exception of a three prong cord that was added at some point. Checked all the tubes and they all tested strong. Original RCA 6L6's, Mullard GZ34 in the rectifier. one Telefunken 12AX7, the rest were GE 12AT7's or RCA 7025's. The original foot switch was included and was in very good condition. Speaker and harness were untouched. I pulled off all the knobs and sprayed all the pots with Gold Deoxit. Spun them around a few times and plugged it back in. Let it sit on standby for a few minutes and plugged my '58 RI 335 in to the second channel!:hmm
Simply put, these amps give up the goods. WOW! The second channel started a bit scratchy, but eventually when the dust burned out, the sparkle, bounce, shimmer, punch, clarity, and that Fender TONE filled the room! I could not be happier. If there is a downside, I remember why I sold all my Twin Reverbs! These things are heavy and my back is a bit tweaked! However, the smile on my face compensates for my sore back!:salude
