This is one of the better pictures I have seen, but there must be more out there. Jimmy still has the neck on his brown B-bender Tele body.

The article goes on to state that Fender will also be offering a "pre-Dragon" incarnation of this Tele as it appeared with the original finish and attached round mirrors at some point next year. I personally don't see much of a market for this one as it can be replicated fairly easily by adding your own mirrors on any blonde rosewood fretboard Tele, especially compared to what Fender will probably be asking for their version. Maybe if Page were to be signing them, but he's not.

Am I correct in recollecting that his Tele is top-loaded, and not through the body?

Not quite. His had the body ferrules to string through the body - as were most, if not all slab rosewood neck teles. But his was an early one (1959 or 60) that had a bridge drilled for both normal and top loading. He seemed to prefer the top loading way of stringing though...

I've seen Yardbirds photos of him with it without the custom paint job, so probably a number of years. I'd speculate this was the guitar used to record Zep 1.

I think just 1967 to mid 1969. He got his #1 Les Paul in April of 1969, I believe. It shared the stage with the Dragon Tele for a bit, and then it was all Paul after that.

Lord in heaven this Tele will probably cost as much as the GDP of a small country.

Well, according to the article - he got the Tele in 1966. It was his main guitar until 1969, as stated above.

He also used it in the studio in about 1970 or 71 for the recording of the solo in STH. Who know, he may have used it on other tracks as well?

He then used the only functioning part of the guitar- the neck, quite extensively with the Firm and other things after Zeppelin ended...

Yes, he did.....and was absolutely gutted when the artwork was ruined. I looked over the prototypes with him before it was announced, it's a cool project.

Yes, that's it! Thanks for clarifying.

I am anxious to see the reissues when they arrive. I have never really seen any decent closeups of the Dragon Tele paint job, so am hoping JP was able to provide some. He mentioned that he "stripped" the mirrored version before he painted it, but the body still appears to be a blonde color in the photo below. Perhaps he just meant the mirrors and hardware? Whatever. Should be nice, and pricey!

Yes I've read the interweb banter over the years but it's a bit vague on what exactly happened to the original body. It was a bit of an attempt to get John to offer up some first-hand info.

Gotcha. I have only read that Jimmy "got rid of it."

Here's a better photo. You can see that the finish has been stripped off.

Yep he removed the original finish and mirrors and then painted the "dragon" finish himself. At some point it appears someone other than him attempted to refinish it, and in the process screwed up "something" that in JP's world was significant enough to retire it and move the neck to another body. What exactly that was, and where that body is (JP may have it?) is a mystery to me.

The guitar was stripped by a friend looking after his house when he was away on tour. Friend thought he was doing him a favour, but alas not. JP still has the body.

I would assume it was the one in "Blow Up", which is a slab board blonde Tele. That scene was filmed mid-October '66.

Aside from the obvious cool factor of this guitar being issued is the part of the article that says the original body was restored after Page's idiot friend "refinished it." Who knows if that part of the article is accurate or not?

The new Page Teles sound very cool -- I'm only sorry that Fender didn't also announced they'd be building replicas of his brown stringbender Tele as well, given how prominent a role that guitar played in the last few years of Zeppelin, the ARMS concerts, and the Firm.

What we know for sure is that he has kept the body all of these years. And in multiple interviews he mentioned that when the guy repainted it without his permission he screwed up the bridge pickup. One thing that doesnít jive with dates is Page said he went out on tour In 69 and came back and found the guitar not working. We know that in late 70 or early 71 he used the guitar and the bridge pickup for the stairway solo and rock Ďní roll solo. So it sounds like this friend didnít do this to the guitar until obviously after those recordings. One recent article has Page saying that when putting together the new zeppelin photo book and seeing all the pictures of the dragon he was inspired to repaint the dragon again on the original body. Not sure if thatís true you really canít trust any of these articles to get things exactly right.

Page got such killer tone with that guitar. "How Many More Times" from Danmarks Radio is just savage.

That's the first time I've seen "Rock and Roll" mentioned as a Dragon song, though it's long been speculated it appears on more than just Led Zeppelin and "Stairway to Heaven." Any more confirmed uses?

Don't know if it's confirmed, but I'd bet you a dime to a donut that "Black Dog" is that Tele. Also the solo in "Down By The Seaside"

Still so much mystery and hearsay around this body. It just doesn't all make sense to me. With the resources available to JP all these years a simple paint job and/or pickup repair, especially on a guitar of this perceived importance, is trivial. Unless something very tragic and irreversible happened during the botched refinish job.

We talk of days for which we sit and wait, when all will be revealed.

We know Page had the original neck and body. what about the pickups? Will this be like the collectors choice where Fender tries to get the neck shape as close as possible and body weight and pickup winding similar?

Or is it just a regular tele painted to look like Pages with his signature?

Black Dog to me sounds/feels like a Lester (especially the bends), classic Les Paul on the solo & the main riff/verse tracking sounds like transistor/ss distortion of some type, like mixing up line/mic levels patched into a tape machine or something, very lo-fi. Funky ****. I love how a lot of 60's/70's bands, especially Led Zeppelin though, kept experimenting all the time with guitar sounds.

I remember reading in The Tone Quest Report (I think) way back that they thought Page used the Tele on SIBLY (studio version -Zeppelin III) Apparently, if you listen closely with headphones, you may be able to hear single coil hum. I was too lazy to verify the claim...
    Sounds plausible, I guess.
