Bought an older Marshall Cabinet - Info Wanted

So I have been looking for another B cabinet to complete my live rig. I was using two 900 series bottoms and one of the cabinets was lost.

I still have one 1960B that I have had since maybe 1996 that I replaced two speakers that blew with those Hellatones and I really like it.

I walked into Guitar Center and saw this older Marshall cabinet for $475, but it's on 30 day hold. I paid for it but can't pick it up until next month. It sounded really, really good and the guy let me take the back off. It has Celestion G12M speakers in it. Are these speakers durable?

Anyways, was $475 a good price or did I get taken? B cabs are harder to find and most of the 800/900 ones I've seen have been about $599+. Does anyone know the year on this? GC said it was 1980s, but I am thinking it may be older or earlier 80s because my lost cab was an 800 that was 80s. I know there's supposed to be a metal plate with a s/n on the back but there isn't anything on this one.

Anyway, here are some pics. Any help appreciated and thanks!

It does look like an older cab, and it has the 70's chequerboard grill cloth. But the only real way of telling would have been if you had taken a photo of the speaker date codes. Then we could have worked out the year from that.

There shouldn't be to much wrong with those speakers provided the cones are in good nick. They are probably T1221's but have the grey magnet covers rather than the green covers. That doesn't make any difference to the speaker, its just that some people prefer the green covers i.e. greenbacks.

Cool cab!

It can only handle 100 watts max, a 100 watt Marshall head puts out way more
cranked so be careful what you run through it.

If those are original untouched G12M's that cab should sound fantastic!!

Jimmy

EDIT: This is my 1000th post!!

Do I get a toaster or something??

Thanks for the info. I am using a Soldano head with it so I'll probably pull these speakers out to be safe!

What I'm thinking is I'll pull them out and keep them at home while I take the cab out. Once the live stuff I have lined up is done I can put them back in.

We are supposed to have a 'reconditioned Western Electric Princess phone' in stock. I'll ship it when I find it...

Cool cab. Celestion only used the grey backs for a short period so we can date it fairly accurately just from that. The date codes are going to be somewhere between Aug 1973 and spring 1974.

Cones will either be pulsonic or RICs. Both good cones in my opinion. A lot of the RIC cones are unstamped during that period or have the codes written in yellow chalk, just in case you look and think they are recones.

Thanks so much for the help. When I pick it up (it was on 30 days hold) I'll check that out. I should have taken pics of the numbers when I had it open. If it's a 73/74 that would that be for a JMP head?

I highly doubt you're playing the Soldano at full volume and probably not even close to half. Those speakers will be fine and will sound great! If you pull them out and don't use them, what's the point in buying the cab??

You have a good point, especially since I crank my old Gretsch 6160 all the time and it's got the original Jensens in it and ditto my old Vibrolux and tweed Deluxe.

When I tried this cab at GC to make sure it wasn't blown it seemed darker than the 1960B I have now, but I tried it with a BF Bassman head, which is different from a Soldano. Are these darker than what I have now (IIRC I have a pair of HellatoneV30s and a pair of whatever comes in those 90s cabs). This cab sounded killer, but obviously it's apples and oranges with a Bassman to a Soldano.

Thanks again!

I picked it up this morning.

Speaker codes are:

KF23, which according to the site I looked at is 1973
T.1221, which is 16 ohm 25w from what I saw.

100w Super Leads put out around 115w clean which is with the volume setting around 4. At 7 or higher they can hit 190-220w depending on the plate voltage. That's why they sold 100w heads with two cabinets, as a stack. Not surprised you blew yours, but I know lots of players who have. So you're not alone, sir!

does the cab have the small '120 watt' tag on the back?
i have a bunch of marshall cabs and have a couple of 74 120 watt cabs that sound better for hard rock than any of the others including old plexi cabs etc.
i lovem. i was last running my 50 watt jcm 800 head through one of them and it was killer crunch tone.
i would never shove a 100 watt super lead through one. heck my 71 super lead is so explosively loud i would be scared to run it through both of the cabs! might be ok though. the rig would be great for an outdoor gig, like at a football field or something.
congrats on the score. i would not unsolder anything.you have one of the better marshall cabs you could hope to find...at least to me anyway
