My wife bought me a custom made Justin Johnson (http://www.justinjohnsonlive.com) 4-string cigar box guitar for Christmas.
I loved the sound and feel of it so much, I decided to build my own.
I started with a one-string Diddley Bow. I bought a box and large dowel then added a pickup, a tuner from my junk bin, and used a hose clamp for a nut and large bolt for the bridge. I used rubber o-rings as fret markers.
I then decided to build a "lunch box" guitar. I found a cool lunch box on Amazon painted to look like a 59 Bassman (I just happened to have built my own clone of that amp) and a neck (I have no real woodworking tools). I used Fender tuners and bridge saddles (I've since added a Fender medium pick to the headstock as decoration), and a pickup.
All three sound really gnarly through my Champ amp clones.
Now I'm trying to figure out how to build a bass using a shovel and mailbox!
