• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

In this FB thread about Marriott's " Dwight " the subject of Steve selling a number of LP Customs to Top Gear Music came up and John Skinner , Steve's tech at the time chimed in:

In 1974 Steve , unbelievably, was pretty much out of money. He was selling things left right and centre just to get a bit of cash. I think that's what happened to a lot of his guitars at he time. It's interesting you should mention the Cherry LP being sold. One day in '76 0r '77 Steve and I went to Mick Jaggers mansion near Newbury to look for it. Steve swore blind he had given it to Keith Richards, and now he wanted it back . After searching through what seemed like 200 guitars at Mick's we gave up and came home. Maybe Steve had forgotten that he had sold it to Top Gear Music, bless him .

The Cherry 3 pick up Custom in question that was for sale at Top Gear definitely came from Dave Ball of Procul/Bedlam , not Steve.

So .. any one ever see Keith playing a cherry Custom?

Never, But Keith/the Stones have a warehouse full of Vintage guitars . Also I have that book by the author Andy Bubiak that did The Guitars of the Rolling Stones and I don't remember that .The Stones have a bunch of Single cut and double cut Les Paul Juniors and Specials in Cherry .

Thanks ! Come to think of it Alan Rogan is a former Top Gear employee, he'd also have access to the Stones' warehouse . I'll ask him but doubt whether he'd want to sort through them all :)

BTW I worked on a number of Beatles' guitars back then that aren't in Andy's book . Who carried a camera while they were setting guitars up in 1970? ( Andy would have been 7 yrs old at the time)

In Keith's autobiography he claims to have 3,000 guitars. I certainly don't doubt him. I 50 years, he was probably given and purchased a whole S-Load of guitars.

Andy's an old friend of mine and I know how hard he worked on that book. Directly with them and those involved with them. Pray tell, what guitars? The gear used isn't much of a mystery in 70 AFAIK, but let me know and I'll tell Andy how he got it wrong.

Thanks for the interest , that would be great!

Many years ago I emailed Andy about a black Hohner fretless guitar which was among a pile of Beatle guitars ( mainly George's) dropped off at Top Gear in '73 for restringing and set up. I had no photos or documentation and at that time Andy seemed to doubt it's existence ... I finally found a photograph of the Hohner Fretless with George & I have since found a clearer colour shot.

It may well be mentioned in a more recent edition , I'd be very interested to know.

I also mentioned this to Andy and he wasn't aware of it. Besides working at Top Gear I played in a band managed by Bill Collins who also managed Badfinger with whom we shared a rehearsal space next door at 6 Denmark St.

I'll pass it on as I hope to see him in May. I know he revised the original edition, but Andy has to have documentation. Norm Harris had a photo of George with my 59 Burst. I had sold it to Norm and thought George bought it to ransom Lucy, but it was just a photo prop. So much for my Beatle fantasy.....

Al, is the photo of your 'Burst the one in Norm's book - Confessions of a Vintage Guitar Dealer, page 38, showing George holding Lucy, Norm, and Mal Evans ( The Beatles Road Manager ) holding a 'Burst?

Thanks, I couldn't find the email address I had . The Hohner is self explanatory , there it is in George's collection. Since Pete Ham is no longer with us Joey Molland or Tagg Hall ( Badfinger roadie) would confirm the "hand me down" gear.

Phone cams would have been handy back then. We bought quite a few guitars and amps from Mitch Mitchell not long after JH died and sold them at regular retail prices but to people who weren't there it's just a story.

The photo was a polroid tacked by the front door of the old Reseada/Tampa? can't remember. Late 70's early 90s. George is sitting down playing my Tobacco Burst.

I know Andy limited the scope to gear owned and USED on recordings or live performance as well as historical first and early instruments. He wasn't trying to list accumulated gear merely owned or possessed. I can understand why. Is it OK for me to send the link?

I cannot imagine how very groovy it all must have been in London at that time! Badfinger was a GREAT band, and so sad.

I don't think the guitar in the linked FaceBook George Harrison picture(#6 according to the caption) can be the Rosewood Tele. Harrison gave that guitar to Delaney Bramlett in Dec of 69 and it remained in Bramlett's possession until he auctioned in off in 2003. (Bought by Ed Begely Jr on behalf of Harrison's widow.)

Thanks . It would be interesting to know what year that photo was taken . Either way , that black Hohner was definitely in the batch that came in .

Hi I think that guitar is actually a one off, it is a fretless prototype guitar made by Bartell of California and it is still in the UK
George gave it to guitar pro Ray Russell while working together on the film Water.

A little late ...but as previously posted the fretless guitar in question has turned up , turns out George gifted it to a Top Gear regular, London session player Ray Russell.

I emailed this info to Andy and he's kindly responded which is great !!
