Recently purchased a very mangled Les Paul jr. For $150. Inspecting the electronics i found an original 50s wiring harness with bumblebee cap and original looking p90. The finish on the guitar has been very poorly sanded off and there’s been binding added, but the finish inside the cavities looks to me like an original Gibson cherry finish..? Did they make single cut juniors in cherry in the 50s? Also i suspect it has been re necked at some point in the 60s because the headstock angle looks more 60s to me than 50s.

What are the date codes on the pots? :hmm

I have a cherry, single cut 1959 Special.
I don't remember if any verified Juniors have been seem, but I would think so. :)

It was also a common refin color, back 30-50 years ago. :ganz

Here’s a terrible picture of the codes on the side of the volume pot

Good to know!! 1957 junior for $150!!! Ya think they just sprayed the red over the finish in the cavities? Cause those routes look real crispy to me. I’d imagine they’d look a little more goofed. :hmm

Whoever decided to sand off the finish using a brick also didn’t feel the need to take off the knob pointers hahahaha. Currently working to restore this beauty closer to its original form.

When I worked at Outlaw Guitars in Green Brook, N.J. in the 1990's, I distinctly remember selling two cherry 1959 Gibson single cut Les Paul Juniors. I still kick myself for not buying one of those for myself, but I was paying off a mono 1959 355 at the time. I also remember selling a 1960 or 1961 double cut junior (not sgjr) in polaris white. Those were the days when we would go to guitar shows and come back with a truckload of purchases of great guitars.
So, yes...there are definitely correct and original single cut 1959 cherry single cut Les Paul Juniors manufactured by Gibson out there.
