Finish checking on Fender guitars in 1958

I've noticed over the years that Fender models made in 1958 seem to have quite a unique, far more exaggerated, finish check to them if they are worn. This is very apparent on the necks. I know Fender had issues the strat decal during this year. Does anyone have any insight why this might be?

Don't know how much more aggressive than, say, blackguards etc but as you can see they aged quickly right out the gate!
