• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Washers will make them lower.

Yup. Mine are currently set up with maximum shaft protrusion (really struggling to avoid innuendo here), and the ones I have tried sit too low. I'm only comparing this to my TH knobs by the way, maybe they were too high? Anyway I got used to it and really liked the height, felt like the knobs were a little closer to hand.

You own real bursts from what I've gathered, what say you? Have you ever had to replace a knob? Could I have your real ones, pretty please?

I have never used a repro knob on a vintage Les Paul. I have old ones for that.

As for other guitars, I don't obsess over the details that bother you. As long as the knob turns and the pots work correctly, I have more important things [like my playing] to worry about.

BTW: Here's a photo of old gold bell knobs I took a while back.

Interesting variation in the photo, good info.

I'm not normally this bothered but this ones annoying me. Just surprised no ones been able to make a more accurate reproduction.

Not really vintage accurate - the only ones that are (IMO), the True Historic ones, Gibson won't sell unless they are attached to a guitar!

Can I ask how you got them because I am also looking for a truss rod cover ?

Someone I know found someone getting rid of a set. Gibson wouldn't sell me any despite my pleas! My toggle switch tip also randomly shattered in the case and they said they would send me a replacement but when it arrived it was just a bog standard non-TH one. Not selling me knobs fair enough but re the toggle tip I'm not overly impressed with the customer service.

That sucks about the switch tip and I am not surprised they did not send you what you wanted .Switch tips are always removed whenever an instrument is shipped because this can happen .Was the switch tip they sent you a regular one or the Historic one ?

Yeah, they emailed back today to be fair and said they'd try to send me the right part. I'm not sure to be honest, my current TH LP is the only one I've got to compare it to! It's got a seam and is a fairly
rubbish looking brown colour.

On the left is broken TH one, on the right is new Gibson one. Probably gonna order some Montreux parts to compare anyway and then sell what I don't use.

I know that’s an old post but was wondering, I bought a few different one over time for my reissues and after a while the knobs crack somehow... Any of these knobs don’t easily crack?

All of the knobs I've replaced on my Gibsons have been with the Retrospec knobs sold by Historic Makeovers, and I've NEVER had cracking issues with them.

They WERE some of the best looking knobs out there, IMO.

Though to anyone looking at them, be aware that they've changed recently. Previously the knobs had an aged look to them with a nice amount of greening. The current knobs have no greening or aging at all and really have more of a NOS look to them. See below. Set of new Retrospec knobs on the left, and the 2 of the older version on the right.

The shape and feel is till very vintage-accurate compared to the pre-True Historic plastics from Gibson, but I vastly preferred the older/aged looking ones to the current ones.

Though I stil own some 50's plastic, lots of knobs and truss covers, switch tips a few poker chips and a jackplate or two, I only put them on vintage guitars. My only concern with reissue guitars has been knobs. The overly amber look just had to go. I found some nice, CHEAP, ones that look and feel right and all is well, .... for me.

The op is looking for vintage exact, with a correct barrel depth where the well that accepts the shaft is very shallow. I know of none other than vintage. If they exist, I'm sure they'd be too much $$$ for this skinflint, but for them that has to have 'em, worth it I guess.
