With all the terrific figured tops Gibson is building these days you don't see too much love for Goldtops so I thought I'd post pics of my new R7. Because of the combination of it being a gloss model with the darkback, this was some sort of a special run designated by three letters which currently escape me. (Edit: PSL for Pre-Sold Limited maybe?) The guitar plays and sounds just like my other 2014 spec Historics, which is to say better than I'm capable of doing justice to. It weighs in at a near perfect (for me anyway) 8.6 pounds and feels even lighter I suspect due to being nicely balanced. She has belly for days, accentuated by the gloss I'm sure.
I've tried to capture the color of the back, but it's elusive. Suffice it to say that it's very dark with just a hint of red that keeps it from being black, and it's translucent enough for the grain to pop through.
A warning about the fingerboard: if you're offended by grainy, variegated and figured boards you might want to stop right here. I personally love 'em like this (especially on goldtops and plaintops) and seek them out. As a bonus, some of the streaking in the board has a bit of red in it, which blends nicely with the touch of red in the back.
I should also say thanks to Brett at Eddie's for his usual fine work!
The pics are a mixture of dealer pics, inside with flash and outside. Not the greatest, but I hope you enjoy.
