What years did the Customs have a flat top rather than a carved top and why? It seems that the original Customs were using the same carved tops that the gold tops had, true?

Flat topped LP Customs? I don't think I've ever heard of one of those. :hmm
[unless you mean SGs]

Hello, new to this forum, young guitar tech from europe here, I'm re upping this post because one of my clients asked me to date his custom. I only got a couple of pics for the moment but the serial stamped is 1 4248 wich raised a lot of doubts after some research about those few rare single cut from 61! The most incredible part would be that this is a 2 humbucker version.. I will have my hand on that guitar next week to check the electronics, headstock and so on and will keep you posted with pics when I figure out how to post some.. šŸ˜…
Does any specialists got thoughts to share about that serial or the pick ups configuration?
Thanks in advance and sorry about grammar and so, English is not my native language.

I think you are perhaps misinterpreting the fact that the original Customs had (carved) mahogany tops, unlike the carved maple tops of the Standards? This would technically make the Customs all mahogany, whereas the Standards had mahogany bodies and (carved) maple tops. Is that what you are thinking?

Right.....and there are a few other '61 BBs with a higher serial ## than this one too.

TM-1 and I have a private collector friend that has a very nice '61 BB. Thin '60-style neck and a great playing guitar. Not sure of the S/N but I can check next time I see him. I am not at liberty to share what it may be but would be able to say if it was higher or lower than this example.
