• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I punched a hole in the side of the chassis of my Blue Tube pedal to accommodate an NOS 6SL7 tube that I had made a noval 9 pin to octal tube adapter and wired appropriately. the results were as follows:
Notice the bulbous glowing octal tube partially exposed. This does sound excellent.

I have a couple of late 40's early 50's Stromberg and Carlson Industrial mono PA tube amps set up for guitar. The octal preamp tubes and coke bottle 6L6B tubes with that massive iron transformer brews up a thick and tasty gumbolicious tone stew of the thickest kind!!! Big fan of those big tone big bottles.

I'm with you on those big bottle octals. I have two Stromberg Carlson mono PA amps, one is in an old Laney combo cab topped with a Peavey Rockmaster preamp. I also have a pair of old Bogner PA amps that are both triple 5AR4 rectifiers that could be transformed into guitar amps or?

It's not a tube tumor

That sounds like a really cool idea. I'm going to have to experiment with that. I made a Valvecaster clean boost a few years ago that is excellent for pushing a tube amp on the edge of break up over the top. It uses a 12AU7 but I like running a 12BH7 in mine.

I like all the Stromberg Carlson love. I've got a AU29 that has 6SJ7 octal pentodes in the preamp. It's a cool little amp. Here's a short clip of it with a MIM Telecaster and my Valvecaster pushing it over the top. Excuse the rat's nest wiring in the VC. It was my first attemp and it required a lot of tweaking after the fact that lead to a big mess. It makes it look vintage though right? :rofl I ran the AU29 through a Mass 100 set to load so I could run the line out from the Mass through a few time based pedals and then to a rack mounted power amp to power the cabs. Now I can't wait to build an octal version with a 6SN7 in it. That will be fun, thanks for the tip!

Now that is really cool. I am using a 12BH7 in the output of my Vox Lil' Night Train. In another thread I wrote about using a 12AU7 to 6SN7 adapter to run a 6SN7 as an output tube on the Vox. It sounded great until you add some gain, then the tube became very microphonic. i will try it again and try using O-rings to quiet the tube. I am also considering either using the adapters in my Fender Vibro Champ and using 6SL7 tubes in place of the 12AX7 tubes or using 6SL7 tubes for the preamp and PI and a 6SN7 for the output in the Vox Lil' Night Train (all octal tube Vox)

Sounds really cool, where did you get the schematic for it?
I don't have a schematic. What I did is went online and got the pinouts on a 12AX7 and a 6SL7 and matched the pinout/wiring and drew out on a piece of paper: Anode to anode
Grid to grid
Cathode to cathode
Heater to heater on each tube

Octals are great. Every player needs to have an Octal tone source at thier disposal. The old Ampegs from the 60's are great and so are the early Fender Tweeds.

My favorite amp is octal. At Mars Specialist. Affordable. Awesome. I will pimp these 'til the day I die.
