• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

What's the deal with this?

So we agree that the oval is something that came from the factory on some guitars around the mid 70s?
:hmm
The first batch of guitars with the decal had the oval recess for the oval decal to fit in. Soon discontinued as an unnecessary production step. Some guitars were being put out before the production line was fully equipped with decals.

Pretty much in 1975 ONLY. First oval decals had 99 prefix for 1975...
Guitarmikey, your SG may have been an early '75..(late '74 pot codes I bet):hmm

Hilarious. So first it was a 67, then a 72, then a 73 but none of those years had 3 piece maple necks. :rofl
