• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Honest opinion about the G Force tuners

I haven't tried one from 2016 or 2017 (or the newly out 2018s yet). However, I did try several of the 2014 & 2015 versions in stores when they first came out. Not one time could I ever get it to actually tune correctly. I decided early on that it was not for me (and I don't have a great ear when it comes to tuning, so it could have been a great thing for me). However, regardless of its lack of actual functionality, I doubt I could have ever actually have one on a guitar of mine... I mean, let's face it, it's cheap looking and ugly as homemade sin on the back of an otherwise gorgeous Gibson headstock.

Add to this the numerous stories of it behaving unpredictably/poorly in live/loud environments and it just seems like a gigantic swing & a miss from Gibson--multiple years in a row now!:dang It's a shame that Henry J invested so much into it both ego-wise and financially (especially financially)... it's like he can't let it go and admit it's a failure. I guess the proper psychological term for it is... denial.

I bought a set a few years ago. I used the same set on three different guitars. As far as tuning, they worked great. Most folks who have tried them in stores never got deep enough into them to have a clue, and generally the salespeople have no clue either. I have read all the hate on most forums, but the truth is...most of that hate includes things that were not true about the tuners (like things they can't do, but they actually can). BOTTOM LINE: They tune great. There is a learning curve to do more than just simply tune a guitar. WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT THEM had nothing to do with tuning....I did not like the way the strings had to wound on top of the tuner. That was annoying. It should have been a top screw type of thing which already exists. It would have been so much better. I just sold my set, only because I don't have any guitars that my set would fit at the moment. FOR THE RECORD: I also owned an original ROBOT SG. Now THAT was overly complex, and I traded that guitar for a nice LP before the price dropped. My main concern was that Gibson was no longer going to fix them as needed. No bueno.:peace2

Tried the G-force and while it worked, going to different tunings with the same gauge strings is not always optimal. Also had a guitar stop working while trying it, the tuner stopped moving. So reliability is a concern. Lastly, the guitar neck did not suit me.

I will stick to using different guitars setup for different tunings. More to carry but it works.

My 2017 Les Paul Standard hp will not get in perfect tune. I have resorted to tuning by hand to get tuning right.

I have cursed the lack of locking tuners and the way the string posts are machined. Whoever designed these and the top brass at Gibson that signed off on this latest "improved" tuner does not get it.

This 2017 Les Paul is an awesome sounding and playing guitar, otherwise I would of returned it since I bought it new. Eventually I'll replace with locking tuners.

I have 1.
I like it enough that I won't be selling it anytime soon.

May not be a ringing endorsement, but when it has a good charge, the tuners work.
I have a Variax too. it gets you to the same place, just by a different means.

I still sound like crap with either guitar.:laugh2:

Would I want those changes on a R9? No.
But, in the modern line, I think it has a place.

My sentiments. :salude

I don't like them. I think they look terrible, and unfortunately for Gibson, appearance is the second reason I buy a particular guitar. To me they just don't fit. The first reason is sound. Those things are noisy. OK, it's while they are working, but I find it annoying. Many people find me annoying, so feel free to ignore what I just wrote (typed, scrivened).

I also don't like something that leaks acid anywhere near my guitars.

I can tune my guitar manually. First thing I learned to do. I despise G-Force tuners. If someone likes them, go for it. They are, imho, an abomination spawned by satan. Evil incarnate.

Just got my first G-Force equipped guitar. It was a left over 2015 so saw I saw it I was "stuck" with the system until I replaced it.
Now, having it and using it for almost a week I think it is GREAT. So much so that I'd even consider fitting a set on a few of my other guitars.

Do I know how to tune? I hope so. I've been playing for over fifty years.

I wish I'd had this in my concert and studio days. Oh, to have been able to just push a button and be tuned in either environment!
Which is worse? A loud audience of screaming teenyboppers in a situation where you can't make "noise" without hurting a carefully crafted and rehearsed performance" -Or a acoustically dead studio environment where the producer wants everything NOW?

All that is long past for me, but oh, still, the joy of working on a song, hearing that its off a bit, and just hitting a button to make it right with no loss of concentration or focus. WooHoo!

The G Force tuning system is good - enough I bought a second one as a backup. I have a whole fleet of guitars and its nice to have one that can take care of itself for once. Great to have many tunings, tune with a Capo, and give it a quick check whenever I want. I have some 35 years at this guitar thing and I can tell you its good. The tuning is spot on to a Snark and stable and in a band situation any small inaccuracy won't not be noticed.

It is interesting to note that the system learns the particulars of your guitar: so it can adjust how it tunes for how you play it so it is really in tune. This seems to fix spending 10 minutes getting the ultimate tuning and then going sharp as you fret notes and move around the neck. I don't know how it does it but its made in Germany and they are fanatical about perfection. They are 24-to-1 and can tune more precise than your fingers can adjust ordinary tuners.

The one I have is on a Les Paul and it is pretty slick. Its also the later version of the G Force before Gibson and Tronical had their falling out. I am old school but one fancy rig that is every tuning needed and several at a show is a nice guitar to have in your live rack. I have played hundreds of shows and would not hesitate to use it live. And they pop off pretty easy to have replacement tuners put on so it is not a big deal if you don't like them. The system sells for $325.00 plus dollars if you buy one new and they put them on $3000.00 class guitars.

My only advice is to give it a try and don't let some guy you never met on the internet sway you away from them because he hates technology - and also thinks Les Pauls need to be made out of concrete and to 1950s specs to be real. I'm a purist (not a cork sniffer) and I give the G Force a big thumbs up.

I have NOT experienced any of the negatives people are spouting about these tuners - you just got to understand how it works and strum slowly with as little multi-string vibration as possible. Any good technology is only as good as the dummy working it so keep that in mind.

Haters gonna hate... I have 7 or 8 guitars with G Force installed and I really like them. I don't really care how the technophobes feel about them. :salude
people trash anyone who mods their Gibsons because they are not players but instead investors of tax haven instruments etc

Can you change the pegs on this g force system? i want the g force with gold tuners to match my hardware no a custom les paul axcess

I have a couple Gold Hardware G-Force tuners... so it is certainly an option...

Mine works as advertised, is accurate, and seems sturdy. If I needed the alternate tunings, like Eb, or drop D, I'd print a tiny label and tape to the side of the housing. I'd like to have a Tronical/Gforce/Min Etune on my pedal steel guitar, where I have to tweak each pitch to a formula. Storing that formula as a custom tuning, would be an awesome feature for pedal steel.

I have a 2017 Les Paul Standard HP with Robotuners and a 2018 Les Paul Standard HP with locking Klusons. When I picked up the 2017 used I bought the same locking Klusons for it thinking I’d hate the robos. Well, they have grown on me and actually work great. No problems and they are still on there. Fine tuning setting is key.

True - A LP does not have to be a 1st year issue copy to be a LP.

I don't think the pegs are changeable but you can get other styles of peg from Tronical. Go to their site and they have chrome tulip and mint tulip and other styles of servos (the tuners themselves).

If you like a guitar they're attached to then buy it. You can always remove them. Alternatively they should be pretty cheap to pick up second hand and bar some minor fiddling you might encounter around the headstock hole diameters you can retrofit them.

Personally I took them off my 2015. I liked the idea at first and did find it useful in rehearsals to quickly tune up, but I found a few issues - they didn't always tune accurately, especially the 'quick' setting, and they didn't hold their tune as well as traditional machineheads for me. I replaced them with locking gotohs and the problem went away, plus the guitar felt more balanced (in weight).

"...but with Tronicals 2 year no questions asked warranty..."

Therein lies my issue with this sort of technology. In and of itself it's definitely useful. The reason I am opposed to it is that I expect all of the hardware on my guitars (with the exception of strings, if you want to label them as hardware) to last many, many, many years. I would argue that with proper care the instrument and its hardware should outlast me. Potentiometers might be the exception, but I now have guitars that are around 20 years old with their original pots which are still working like new.

My .02

They go off as easy as they go on - no drilling, no extra holes. In fact you probably could use them for special purposes then take them off when not needed. I played about 1/3 of the entire set using a capo and needed a separate guitar for 1/2 step. One LP with this tuner could have covered everything. Not to mention the multitude of open and slide tunings plug you can create your own. Will it be on the LP 30 years from now, probably not but you are playing it now.

Hi. I am thinking of getting a new Gibson just for the G Force tuners. It seems many people are not crazy about them. I am just wondering if there is any compelling reason I should not get them. Let me tell you where I come from:

1. I already have two Les Pauls, so I am not getting my first Gibson and want it "organic" or "pure".

2. I don't mind that it does not have a display and you have to memorize the settings. I am not using in on stage and I can have a cheat sheet.

3. It doesn't have to be super accurate. I can always fine tune the strings. This is going to be a pure practice guitar.

4. Like all technology I know in a few years it will be much improved. But life is short and it will be a few more years where I am too lazy to practice many of the songs in alternate turnings just because I'm tired always having to remember tuning my guitar this way and that way.

5. I am thinking of getting the Studio with the super light hallowed out body and skinny neck. I have two Les Paul with fat necks and a light guitar would make a good practice guitar.

6. Resell value is not a concern. I don't mind if the guitar does not hold up in value because the tuning technology becomes outdated in a few years.

So with these said, is there any compelling reason I should reconsider getting one of those G Force guitars?

Thanks for any opinion. I just don't want any buyer's remorse and have it gathering dusts in the garage.

Based on your 6 points above, no reason at all not to get the G-Force tuners. I have tried the G Force but have never owned it so I can't speak to long term reliability. The only attraction to me personally was the altered tunings - that to me is a very convenient feature to have. Sounds like you've researched it well and the very worse thing that could happen is you just replace them with standard tuners (like everyone else! :)). Cheers!

They are flimsy and built like shit.

A third of the new guitars I tried them on were defective. Unable to function, with random keys unwinding and unable to hold tension, or pitch.

They do not hold up. The failure rate in the first two years was ridiculous.

The nut. Brass doesn't work. Titanium does. Stock, non adjustable string spacing.

Wide neck coupled with a non adjustable, narrow string spacing. STUPID!!

While the idea is smart, the execution was amateurish and not practical. The adjustable nut is great. Titanium works perfect, being able to adjust height offers great utility. Making the string spacing for the regular neck width was right. Putting it on a wider neck is stupid. The Gibson G Force Tuners are a flimsy crapshoot at best.

So now another HJ misstep taints a great idea.

Try to get the German Tronical retro fit ones. The set on a friends 355 have worked flawlessly for over 6 yrs.

Wait - I may have spoken too soon. Tronical made both the G Force and Min Etune for Gibson. I may have the Min Etune on my LP. Are they the same, or was there a re-design? Is one worse than the other?
