Les didn't think much of the real early SG models and had Gibson take his name off the 60s Les Paul Custom (pre-SG). He strongly objected to the way the neck attached to the body and how it destroyed the instrument's sustain (he was really big on that). He disliked its weight (for the same reason) and complained about the high E-string nut being cut too close to the edge. As he was playing my own 1962 Custom back in 1977, sure enough, the e-string popped right out on him.
I haven't played any of the later SGs. I'm sure that they are fine. That's how we learn!
