J.D. Simo's first lesson produced exclusively for the Les Paul Forum!

I'm VERY excited to present to you, as promised, J.D. Simo's first(in a series of what we hope will be many!) lesson, produced exclusively for the Les Paul Forum.
First of all, let's all thank J.D. for taking the time out for us. It is REALLY appreciated.
We're going to eventually figure out where we are going to permanently house these lessons, but for the time being, I figured....let's put it here!!!

    Without further ado....J.D. Simo!

Thanks for taking the time to put this together J.D.!

I agree with your comment about phrasing. Sometimes learning to not play is harder than learning to play.

Awesome tutorial! Perfect blend of talking and playing... brilliant explanation of your take on phrasing theory with excellent practical examples to back it up. Constantly build those muscles and listen to/emulate great music.... great advice! Horns are great to listen to, especially sax, as they are right in the middle of that dynamic expressive human vocal range and the more limited guitar fretboard range (unless you are using a slide... which is why Duane loved it so much).

Thanks so much for the contribution!

Thanks everyone. My pleasure!! This hopefully is a topic that can be of some help. I was having dinner last night with Jack Pearson and we talked about how much we've worked and continue to try and improve this aspect of our playing and I figured it was a good place to start. Thanks for all the love guys! Hopefully I'll see some of you on this next upcoming SIMO tour which starts Tuesday.
    Peace

Here's another video of J.D., which is a nice compliment to the one he did for us, where he discusses his right hand technique. It fits in very nicely with our lesson on vibrato and phrasing.

Getting to hear him play a 58 V is just icing on the cake!

Great player and personality. I wish I was local to JD so I could volunteer to produce the vids.

I love JD's point about phrasing. When I was a teenager, this guy Dave Sharkey, who used to play with Leon Russell, told me to think about sax players. He said that they have to take a breath between licks.

Also, it's interesting that he's a finger vibrato guy. I've always been a finger or wrist vibrato guy, but I'm consciously trying to make a move to being a forearm vibrato guy, where the fulcrum is your elbow. It's a little slower and sexier, like Mickk Ralphs on "Rock Steady."

My take away from the second video is that drummers are a pain in the ass.

Just listen to John Coltrane play & you'll understand all about phrasing. Great advice from Dave Sharkey.

Thanks for the great 1st lesson video JD.

What I see in his playng is a confidence that is a very important in projecting the notes as an emotion.

That vibrato, the lighter right hand and the authoritve left hand, all learned to play together well.

    He does it well.
