• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Show us your plain top R8....

This is my 2014 "Plaintop" R8 that I picked out direct from Gibson. I've always wanted a Les Paul tailored and fit just for me. I had a part time job as a guitar teacher so I could get dealer info and talk to Gibson about ending my search. A nice juicy neck and a perfect paint job, very subtle flame until in the right lights then BOOM totally flame maple. I was so excited to get this guitar after they finished it I couldn't wait! Here is their photo before it was shipped to Naperville Music (IL) where the story get's even more crazy. I called my friend, Ethan, to come in to the shop when the guitar got there. When he got there he fully paid for the guitar and gifted it to me! I stood in his wedding that year but I, along with the entire shop, were blown away by the gesture. It was over the top!

To this day it remains perfect and completely stock from the factory.:dude:

As you can see there's a little bit of flame and quilt texture to the maple top. Just a beautiful guitar. I really love the 2014 Reissues.

Amazing how different angles can make these tops pop isn’t it?

You call that a Plaintop? It's gorgeous!! My top is as plain as a piece of cardboard, but I love it.

This is my 2013 Sunrise Tea Burst plain top R8. As far as tops go, this one is a favorite for it's flowing Eastern Rock Maple grain and subtle shifting figure which presents quite differently from all angles with a lot of roll and flash. My pal Gary in Reno had a 1958 that was very similar, very similar, and I loved that guitar so this one was a no brainer for me. I cannot believe it was sold as a plain top, but I can understand that it isn't quite the flashy figure to demand an up charge and would disappoint many looking for a flame or figured top.

It shows how beauty is in the eye of the beholder and maybe because I have always liked this classic type of Rock Maple and my super fond memories of my my now passed good friends 1958 Les Paul that he was so generous with, that I just couldn't pass this up. That it represented the best cash deal I have ever made on these guitars is even more reason to love it!!!!! 2013 and 2014 were just amazing years for plain top R8's from those I saw. I also have a 2013 R9, as I bought the pair when I survived yet another major surgery and the loss of my left humerus as incentive to heal and as a celebration of sorts.

Saddly, I have not mended enough to be able to play well anymore and these are a sad pair in a way as I never got to gig with them, or really play well enough to justify having at this point, but they did represent hope and that's why I keep them.bbjdddjc_zpsbed8fc9b.jpg

My good friend's 2010 R8 that I found for him used at WW.
8.3lbs, and a neck carve that's actually quite small for a typical R8.
I would have bought it if he had not.

Those frets look super low, far lower than what i've got on my (albeit beginner level) Les Paul. Would they be considered similar to Fretless Wonder style frets?
Seems like usual frets to me. Fretless wonder style would be wider.

Nope. Fretless Wonder frets were very narrow and flat. Super low almost like painted on. Only Les Paul Customs from 1954- late 70's. Pre 1959 jumbo frets were narrow but taller with a typical fret crown and not as low and flat.
