• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

70's Gibsons. Show off your Norlins.

Since I put in the new pickups, I felt I needed to record a video. I really do love the tone of these pickups in this guitar. I haven't recorded myself in years. Please forgive the annoying cliché noodler licks...

Wonder if these would have gotten better fanfare had they retained the
P-90 format of the LSLP Standards? :3zone

I bought my first one in 73. The mini hum Deluxe was extremely popular, even after the Standard was reissued.

I hear ya, but most people in my world did not like and still don`t the mini`s. I mean ,no one said
I`m gonna put mini`s in my 1970`s Custom. Cause they sound so good. Or let me yank these
Alnico`s out of my LE and slap in some mini`s. Not gonna happen.
I just think they would have been accepted to this day with P-90`s.
I also got my 1st in 70`s. Did not care for the mini`s. But what do I know.:##

Now sold, '70, or '71? ES-355...great sounding guitar, but the neck annoyed me.

I have a big moist spot for Wine Red Customs. For me, a Wine Red maple cap Les Paul Custom is the poster girl Norlin Era guitar, followed closely by the gorgeous and amazingly classy, Antique Sunburst, (my all time favorite burst finish), best seen on 25/50th Anniversary Les Pauls and KM Standards.

You gotta hand it to Gibson under Norlin, a sweet wine finished Custom just looks tits!! Good reason for smilin'!:salude:yah:hank:hank

1980 Standards did not come equipted with Shaw Reissue Pat. App. For. Humbuckers.

I thought the stamps on them were one of the Shaw codes. If not, any ideas on what they might be? I thought some of the early 80’s had Shaw’s.

Those aren't Shaw codes. Those are the regular 498 humbuckers. Shaw codes are 137 XXX neck and 138 XXX bridge (IIRC)

Quote from Tim Shaw:
"
"This is pretty easy, really. At that time, the part numbers for pickups all began with “13”, so a Les Paul fingerboard pickup, in this particular series, was a 13137 and the bridge pickup was a 13138. Usually, but not always, they were consecutive numbers, and usually, but again not always, the fingerboard pickup was the lower of the two numbers, and again usually, but not always, the lower number was odd.

Your correspondent is right in deducing that the last three numbers are month and year.

I’m sorry that you guys get stuck answering questions about something that Gibson did in 1982. The sad thing is that nobody in their Customer Service remembers this, and I only do because I was there. They still have a few engineers from that period, but apparently the left hand can’t talk to the right hand!"

Tim"
