• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Which wire for re-fret

One of my Historics will get a Makeover in the next months ...
The one thing that´s bugging me is the fretwire.

Anyone here who changed the frets? Which wire did you chose and why?

I´m just trying to collect some opinions on that topic.

I just got a vintage 58 SC Les Paul Junior back from a fret job and Plek. Thanks Phil. I specified frets at 0.050" X 0.100". I don't know what these are called in the Dunlop catalog, but they are pretty dang close to Gibson reissue frets wire. Realize that the Pleck machine will shave them down a little from these dimensions. So you end up with something a little less tall which if fine.

My LP Junior plays like butter and sounds amazing now.

Sounds good, thx.

A friend of mine also has a 58 SC which had a refret some years ago. But those frets are way to jumbo-esque. I think I´d prefer also some smaller frets.

I'm liking 6125 (.095”x.047”) these days.
It's right there in between 6105 and 6150.

I measured .105x.056 for the historic frets.
Can somebody confirm this?

On the current Historic Les Pauls, I measured Gibson fretwire at approximately .100" wide and between .045" - .049" high (after Plek).

Dunlop 6150 is pretty close, .102" wide and .042" tall, so basically the same width but not quite as tall as the stock Gibson wire.

StewMac "Wide/High" wire is .100" x .050" which is what I believe is closest to what Gibson is using.

Yep, AKA StewMac #0154, which after pleking is close to the wire on my '09 R9.

My '00 R9 came with Dunlop 6105 (or similar), which is .090" x .055." They proved too tall for me, so I had them milled to about .045," but I do like the relatively narrow width. StewMac #0152 Medium/Higher is close to that at .092" x .048" (If it helps, according to the website it's "Dan Erlewine's favorite fretwire!" :2cool ).
