All I did was forward Frank the link. There is a lot of great info on this site. Lots of BS, too. Anything that TW59 says you can take as gospel, though. Let me know when you come through my neck of the woods. I'd love to come hear you guys.

I have a 4 digit '58 too. I'll have to take a look this week to see what is under the cover.

agreed. if we get enough info together, maybe someone should forward a link to folks like Gruhn, Bacon, Duchossoir, etc. if it's a 'matter of public record' that there are enough proven examples like this, it should be documented in the next LP / Vintage book

Four digit '58's arent the earliest '58's are they? Are the big guard '58's the earliest? I wonder if those hace it. Its crazy, its so cliche, but those must have been Friday guitars. Serial number stamps messed up, out of dog ears...I love anomalies like that!

They definitely aren't the earliest 58s [did you mean earliest double cut 58s? ].
They might even be the earliest 59s, but we might never know.

Correct because there is no year number, so these may be the earliest '59's.

Re: '58 Jr P90 pickup mounting question

I finally got around to popping the cover and pulling the pickup on my '58, serial number 6290. It has a soap bar with the two screw holes in the center of the route. I had replaced this pickup for a while during the mid 70's and have had the original pickup back in since sometime in the 80's. The soap bar isn't currently being held on by the 2 screws through the pickup. However, it looks like it used to be based on the appearance of the holes in the top bobbon plate. I can see the rough edges that would have been produced by the two screws going in and then later having been taken out.

I wonder what the hell I did with those?

If these could beearly 1959's, wouldn't the body edge have a softer edge? I thought most (if not all) '58s had the sharper body edges. BCR Greg should know the answers...

Check the pots dates. Crisper body edge on a doublecut would indicate 58' to me.

I opened up a 4 digit 58 a short while back, almost hoping to find a soap bar under the cover. But, no, it had a standard P90, and sadly a tone turd.

I got out three double cut Juniors yesterday, including my one with a soap bar.
I couldn't hear any tone differences that were major enough to attribute to the different pickup mounting.

In Karsten's photo, what is the mark in the cavity at lower right? FWIW there appears to be a corresponding mark on the pickup bottom:

Could be something simple, like a slight build up [or drop] of original finish.

Does anyone have any ideas or theory's why these '58 Jr's never got the 8 in the serial number? I have no clue, I'm sure it could be as simple as a new employee forgot or the stamp was damaged....

I have never seen the ink stamp they used. I have seen several types of stamps [used a few in my teens at a grocery store]. They often have the numbers on a strip and you move the strip by hand to the next number. These always have blank spots on them, and it would be very simple to move the "year digit" to a spot that had no number at all.
Or it is also possible it was damaged.
I cannot think of a [good] reason why they might do this on purpose and I therefore think it might have been an oversight [of some kind] by someone new to stamping the numbers.

These serial numbers are quite different in font and font size than the FON stamps and also the stamps on the paper labels.

The strangest thing I have seen is that most [if not all] the 4 digit guitars have soapbars under the dog ear covers.

There are several noticable anomolies with the ink stamp numbers. I doubt we will ever solve some of them.

My single cut had a a soapbar too. It has two screw holes under the pickup as well. I always assumed mine was 57 but I suppose it could be a 58. (serial number is gone).

I owned this guitar from the early 70's until 2 or 3 days before it became part of the seller's "personal collection" and was listed for sale on ebay. "The edges of the body were professionally and very delicately blended to keep the finish looking as new as possible (it wore thin around the edges)." The edges of the finish "wore thin around the edges" when the guitar fell out of its case and hit the sidewalk.

The AC-10 Twin in the video demo was also mine.
