    Great pic Danny.

'Er skamokawa you better count again.. that is two 356's and two (not one) Johnny A's plus a ____ (what is that? At first I thought 355 but the headstock inlay isn't the normal split diamond).

And RayG that is a great story... and a great memory to have of your dad! CONGRATS!!!

It's an ES-355 body with an L-5S board and headstock inlay. In the late '50's Gibson product demonstrator Andy Nelson had what might have been a prototype of a similar guitar, although that one was cherry red, and I always wanted one. I submitted perhaps twenty requests to Gibson over the years to make me one and in 1994 they finally agreed to do that. It's a fabulous guitar, but unfortunately too heavy for me to enjoy playing in my old age.

Edit: Here's the Andy Nelson ad:

Sorry for the thread hijack--now back to the the intended topic.

Thanks for the info on that sweet looking guitar. No worries about sidetracking this thread as I think we can pause for a few minutes for such a nice guitar. You said it is too heavy for you these days... what does it weigh? Those semihollow guitars generally are less than a Les Paul.

It's a little shy of nine pounds, but my Johnny A's weigh about six and a half, so they're my choice these days for standup gigs. It's kind of too bad, because the 355/L-5 is just an amazing instrument and I'd love to play it more often.

they had to cut a large hole out of the block (but only on one side) to get the electronics in - due to the tiny f-holes of course. Unlike a lot of 335's that had the block cut in half (after about '63 more common it seems), at least this block is still connected in the best possible way - the block and the back are just one piece of wood

Quick question for you owners out there of these fine instruments. A friend of mine has one exactly like like 'Captaincanada's' and it has the same neck profile as my 2000 R9. Were they pretty common or could that be a one off?

It's a great playing guitar. I've tried to snagg it a few times but he's not parting with it.

    Thanks!

Great looking guitars!! I seem to remember a handful of 356s that were green and had quilt tops (i think?). Do any of you guys own one of those???

Some days, I have incredibly fat and stupid fingers. My other guitar is a 339, not a 330. I must have gotten some quizzical looks with that one. The 339 is red. I like the tonality difference between the 336 and the 339. The 336, since the back is solid, one-piece mahogany, has more of a bite and is closer to a Les Paul in sound. The 339, being a hollow body with laminate top and back and a center block, is quite close to the 335 - woody and open sounding. It doesn't have quite the volume of sound when played acoustically, but plugged in, it just rocks.

There was one of those green ones in an old ad for these guitars...

But I've never seen one of the green ones up close (would like to!!!). I know they also made at least one in blue...

I was taking a photo of a new-to-me-amp the other day and got photobombed by my 2003 CS-356 (a Music Machine limited run Stinger in Quilted Heritage Darkburst). Seemed like a good excuse to revive this ol' thread.

Thanks for the kind words, fellas. After more than a decade this guitar still inspires me every time I pick it up: still beautiful, comfortable, versatile - perfect for me.

I don't do nearly as much home recording as I once did, but participation in the JamZone here completely revitalized my playing skills over many months and provided countless hours of challenge and support. It's amazing how far you can go with just five notes! But thanks there too

Have a 97 ES 336. Accidentally cracked the pickguard where it screws into the body by the neck PU.. Anyone know if this is a standard 335 pickguard or does it have to be replaced with a special one and where I can get one? Thx!
