I e-mailed. No longer available. Only the rings will be available from now on.

    Crappy.

    Exact words were:

Does anyone know if Angel parts are available in China? I have a friend who is in Hong Kong this week. If anyone knows of a source, I'll have him bring back all he can carry.

Having been GASsed completely by this and related threads, I threw in the towel and called RS yesterday - Billy set me up with a pickguard, amber knobs, switch tip, R/T ring and ring nut, and PU surrounds - I should have them tomorrow, just another reason to celebrate this Thanksgiving!

Yeah, you are right. Only thing that was different wasthe pickgaurd. Cheaper (1/2 the price of the VC), and cut to Historic spec so no 'vintage' gaps.

Just lost a parts choice I guess.

    Re: Upgrade Plastics Comparision Thread

I just made a pickguard that looks better than my Historic one. I used an Anchor Hocking microwave dish and traced the Historic, then cut it out and smoothed it with a Dremel tool. The microwaveable plastic looks and acts a lot like bakelite. You can't heat it and shape it, so you need to cut it from a flat part. It will crumble if heated and bent. Here's what I came out with. I thought it was OK for a first-timer.

I probably have enough left over for the toggle washer, but I can't figure out how in the hell to make the pickup rings.

What???? Are the Retrovibe rings gone too? They were a bargain. I bought one set for my Murphy, but I was going to buy a couple more sets for my other Historics. I wonder if he was cut off from his supplier?

We probably got a set of those when we got married, almost 20 years ago. I don't think I have another one, but I'll dig around and see. Some of them have thicker bottoms than others, too. The one I used was really a little too thin, but it looks great from the front. The dish looked like a shallow bowl with a flange around it for a lid to snap on, the whole thing was shaped like a stretched octagon.

Well, that's a good recipe for extinction.

Why should anyone join if they can't see what the forum is about? The information about Les Pauls was here for the world to appreciate and learn from. People joined to become a part of the community that they saw here. If people can't see the community anymore, why should they join.

10-12 years ago the buzz in other forums was about how snobby the LPF was and how if you went there you should be prepared to get flamed by the old guard. That attitude slowly changed over the next several years.

The locking of forums like the Tone Zone to the world is a return to the elitist past of the LPF. The "you can't share our knowledge unless you are one of us" attitude makes me sick inside. This is negative to everything I thought the LPF had evolved into and to which I wanted to contribute.

I remember years ago wondering why members who left the forum would delete all of their posts. I thought it was small minded to take whatever knowledge they had shared with the world away from the world. I am struck now with the urge to delete all of my posts; I can't stomach being part of a closed society when all the work I did and documented was intended for an open one.

These are sad days for the LPF.

This is interesrting! Seems RS copied a Historic ring when making thier vintgae replicas. I say this since the markings on the bottom are in the same place for both rings. Vintage rings have the markings on the opposite side that Historic (and RS) do.

    Interesting.

So both are wrong and different from eachother? I don't see the point in getting the imprint right but it's location a mirror image of the ring it is trying to replicate.

    They got it 1/2 right.

Ashbass, my wife was out shopping and picked up some of those painters palettes today. Do you know any way to laminate two of them? Looks like it would be about the right thickness. GREAT color, btw.

What would be EXTREMELY useful, apart from the marvelous photos and info in here already, would be photo comparisons of real-deal originals next to some of the copies.
I'm always looking for ways to make my guitar look old and original, not look like a new '60, so the way the parts looked then, in 58-60, is not terribly interesting as far as I'm concerned - how do they look now, in comparison to the replacement parts available (or homemade)?

If anyone has access to original parts for direct comparison, pleeeeeze....

Not anymore, the good stuff is Stewmac. Colortone vintage amber liquid dye. It's expensive but extremely concentrated, it has just the right tone. In order for stains to be absorbed the surface can not be like new. I use Micromesh from 1500 to 3200 to dull stuff down and give the dye something to bite into. Rubbing a guard on a short pile carpet really works well for a very natural wear, just rub in motion consistant with real playing wear. Wear latex gloves or your going to find out just how concentrated that dye is, for a few days.

Here are some more pics comparing the Fatboy Retrovibe rings to the stock Historic rings.

(note that I am expecting aged pickup covers and a lightly aged wireless abr, as I realize the shiny covers and bridge look a little off, with the tailpiece and studs)

    Brand spankin new...
    Historic Makeovers Inlays (historic spec)

    and installed.

when they arrive, they're a bit dull and its kinda hard to see some of the detail of the figuring. to get an idea of what they'll look like installed, wipe them with a wet rag. Once installed, they are incredible!

Kim and Dave really outdid themselves with these. These will now surely be the ultimate plastics upgrade. Thanks Guys!
