Slipping badly as if the gearing does not work any more
These are fixable IIRC. Dissassemble and see what's up. Gears don't just "slip" even on the shittest tuners. On these there should be a piece that holds the shaft. It can be bent back in place to hold the shaft for better gear contact. Would be a shame to lose it. A whole set would be easier to find. I gave away my last ones of these. Sourced a set for a client and they were just over $100 about 20 years ago.

Open it up, if the gears aren't stripped tighten everything up and make sure nothing is internal is bent. If the gear is bad replace the gear and you'll have the original.

I have six of these from the first Les Paul (and good guitar) I ever owned, a 1980 Standard which I paid $250 for with a 1968 Vibrolux and MXR D+ and a tuner!

How do these tuners work? I've always thought about putting them back on that guitar.

They are actually quite good. They were made by Schaller. Very similar to what Fender was using at the time. Also of which are quite good. Both have similar Schaller mechanisms that are simply covered by a shell.
